Sox Take Back-And-Forth Series Opener with Zephyrs, 9-7

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (21-19) notched their fourth win in their last five games with a 9-7 victory against the New Orleans Zephyrs (21-19) in front of a crowd of 7,862 fans. Two four-run innings supplied enough offense for the Sky Sox to take a back-and-forth series opener.

Colorado Springs did not waste any time getting their bats going as they started the bottom of the first inning with five straight hits, putting up four runs in the inning against a Zephyrs pitching staff that came in to the game ranked first in the Pacific Coast League in ERA. The four-run explosion included a two-RBI double by catcher Matt McBride and a RBI triple by left-fielder Andrew Brown, who both entered the game tied for the team lead in RBI.

New Orleans responded to the Sox early offense by scoring six unanswered runs, scoring at least a run in the second through the fifth innings while the Sky Sox were held scoreless. Seven of the eight position player starters for the Zephyrs notched a multi-hit game, and New Orleans lost the game despite outhitting the Sky Sox 17 to 16.

Colorado Springs tied the game at 6-6 with three consecutive two-out singles in the sixth, and second baseman DJ LeMahieu gave the Sox the lead back at 8-6 with a two-RBI double later in the inning. LeMahieu added another RBI hit in the eighth inning, giving Colorado Springs an insurance run after New Orleans trimmed the margin to 8-7. LeMahieu has 12 RBI in the month of May and also extended his team-high hitting streak to seven games.

Sky Sox reliever Zach Putnam finished off the win by setting the Zephyrs down in order in the ninth to collect his team-leading seventh save of the season. In the second game of the series, the Sox will send out left-hander Drew Pomeranz (1-0, 0.00 ERA), who tossed six shutout innings in his Sky Sox debut and has yet to give up a run while pitching for any Rockies Minor League affiliate. Pomeranz will match up against New Orleans right-hander Alex Sanabia (3-2, 2.90 ERA) at 6:05 p.m. MT.
