Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES -- The Cubs defeated the Salt Lake City Bees 7-5 in the first game of a four-game set at Principal Park Thursday night. Backed by early run support, Travis Wood tossed a solid seven innings, surrendering two runs on five hits while fanning three and walking one. Wood improved to 3-3 on the year, while Brad Mills suffered the loss.

Fireworks came a day early for Cubs fans as Iowa's offense put on a home run display Thursday. The I-Cubs top three prospects, Brett Jackson (3-for-4), Anthony Rizzo (1-for-3), and Josh Vitters (1-for-3), all hit four-baggers. Rizzo led the charge, hitting a home run for a third straight game with a two-run shot in the third inning for his league-leading fourteenth bomb.

Not to be outdone, 3B Josh Vitters hit a solo shot to left to lead off the next inning. The Cubs added one more in the inning with an RBI-groundout by Juan Apodaca.

LF Brett Jackson had a day, reaching base safely in three of his four plate appearances. The California native was just a double shy of hitting for the cycle, ripping a solo home run in the sixth to give the Cubs a 5-2 lead. The left fielder scored on Apodaca's grounder after legging out a triple in the fourth.

The Cubs tacked on two more runs in the seventh as the Bees went through three pitchers in the inning. RF Ty Wright (2-for-3) one of three Cubs with a multi-hit game, ripped an RBI double to plate two those two insurance runs. CF Dave Sappelt also had a multi-hit game with two base knocks and two runs scored. Six of the Cubs' ten hits went for extra bases with three doubles and three home runs.

Jeff Beliveau tossed one scoreless inning of relief. Manny Corpas' outing did not go as smoothly, making things interesting by allowing three runs in the ninth, two on a Kole Calhoun home run.

RHP Frankie De La Cruz will toe the rubber tomorrow in the second game of the four-game set with a 7:05 p.m. start at Principal Park and fireworks to follow. Fans can tune in to Iowa Cubs action with Deene Ehlis and Randy Wehofer on AM 940 with the pregame show beginning at 6:45 p.m.
