Iowa Cubs News Release

Des Moines, IA - Infielder Nate Samson joins the Iowa Cubs today from double-A Tennessee and will be available for tonight's game against the Salt Lake City Bees at Principal Park. Right-handed pitcher Frank Batista was reassigned to double-A Tennessee today.

LHP Scott Maine was recalled to Chicago yesterday. This is Maine's second stint with the Cubs this season. The southpaw went 0-1 with a 1.59 ERA (1ER/5.2IP) in five relief appearances with Chicago from April 20-May 3. Maine is 2-1 with two saves and a 5.25 ERA (7ER/12.0IP) in 10 relief appearances with Iowa this season, holding opponents to a .163 batting average.

Samson, who will wear number 8, posted a .272 average with one home run and six RBI in 29 games with the Smokies. The 24-year-old infielder made the majority of his starts at third base in Tennessee, but also spent time at second base. This promotion will mark the Florida native's second trip to triple-A after finishing the 2008 season (2 games) at Iowa.

Batista appeared in six games with Iowa this season, surrendering six runs (five earned), four walks and one home run while striking out five over 7.2 innings out of the bullpen. The 23-year-old hurler was promoted from double-A Tennessee on April 22.

Infielder Gloskar Amaya returned to extended spring training in Mesa, Ariz. today, after joining the team in Sacramento on Monday afternoon. Amaya hit a pinch-hit double and later scored on an Alfredo Amezaga home run in his only game with Iowa.

The Iowa Cubs open a four-game set with the Salt Lake City Bees tonight with a 6:35 p.m. start at Principal Park.
