San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (January 24, 2005) - On Saturday, the San Jose SaberCats completed their two-and-a-half-week long training camp and today final roster decisions were made, completing the picture of who will take to the field for the defending ArenaBowl champions in 2005.
Among the nucleus of players returning from San Jose's ArenaBowl championship teams of 2002 and 2004 are ArenaBowl XVIII MVP QB Mark Grieb, standout DS Omarr Smith, All-Ironman WR/LB James Roe, scoring machine OS James Hundon and steady linemen Joe Jacobs and Dan Loney.
A young but talented mix of new players will compliment these seasoned veterans and look to continue the winning tradition in San Jose. Under the guidance of the coaching staff and experienced teammates, rookies such as former Fresno State star WR/DB Rodney Wright, former NFLer DS Tremain Mack and Stanford alum WR/DB Ryan Fernandez will be ready to step into important roles without the team missing a beat.
To make room on the 23-man roster the SaberCats released WR/LB Shalon Baker, K Nick Browne, FB/LB Jamaal Cherry, WR/DB Chad Lucas, DS Ron Ockimey, FB/LB Sigmund Platt and OL/DL Kurt Sigler and WR/DB George Williams.
In addition, a number of players were placed on injured reserved: OL/DL Sebastian Barrie (hamstring), WR/DB Yardon Brantley (hamstring), FB/LB Kevin Buck (knee), DS Erin Damond (knee), OL/DL Rex Richards (groin), OL/DL Jeff Ruffin (groin) and DS Clevan Thomas (knee). Players placed on IR must wait at least two weeks before they can be activated.
With the final rosters now in place, the San Jose SaberCats can turn their attention to defending their ArenaBowl title. Looking at the talented roster that Head Coach Darren Arbet and his staff has assembled, this figures to be a difficult but realistic task.
