January 24, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Columbus Destroyers News Release
COLUMBUS, OH â The Columbus Destroyers have named four Team Captains for the 2005 Arena Football League season, Head Coach and General Manager Chris Spielman announced Monday. As voted on by their teammates, this year's captains include wide receiver/defensive back Sedrick Robinson, wide receiver/linebacker Cornelius White, defensive specialist JoJo Polk and lineman Curtis Eason
"All four of these players embody the type of attitude and approach to the game that we expect on and off the field for every player on this team," explained Spielman. "These four will set the standard for everyone else to follow. Sedrick, Cornelius, JoJo and Curtis were selected as leaders by their fellow teammates, which speaks volumes for the type of respect they have from their peers."
Robinson, who was last year's team MVP, returns for his second season with the Destroyers after having a career-year in 2004. He finished with career highs in receptions, receiving yards, kick return yards, kick return touchdowns and all-purpose yards before being named to the AFL's 2004 U.S. Army All-Ironman team.
White is in his third season with the Destroyers, having led the team in receiving for the past two seasons. In 2004, White led Columbus with 78 catches for 1,152 yards and 23 touchdowns, all which were career highs. He posted a career-high 11 catches for 154 yards and three touchdowns on March 20 at New York before finishing as the club's second-leading scorer with a total of 144 points scored (Sedrick Robinson â 182).
Polk led the Destroyers in tackles for the second consecutive season in 2004 with 69 total tackles. He also led the team in pass deflections (11), forced fumbles (2), fumble recoveries (2) and shared the team-lead with three interceptions. Regarded as one of the emotional leaders of the Destroyers' defensive attack, Polk also set a franchise record for tackles in a single season with 86.5 in 2003.
Eason is the lone newcomer of the group, entering his first season with the Destroyers after spending the past two seasons with the Detroit Fury. In 2004, Eason had a career-year, leading all Fury linemen with 28 total tackles, which was also a personal best.
The Destroyers will kick off the 2005 season by hosting the club's second annual Media Day on Tuesday, January 25 at Nationwide Arena. Team President David Paitson and Head Coach Chris Spielman will address the media beginning at 2 p.m. followed by one-on-one interview opportunities with Paitson, Spielman and five select Destroyers players.
The Destroyers open their second season in Columbus on Friday, January 28 when the club hosts the expansion Nashville Kats at Nationwide Arena. Kickoff is slated for 7PM. Season tickets are available now starting as low as $99 for eight regular season games plus one home playoff game.
