DENVER -- The Colorado Crush today announced their 2005 opening day roster, featuring 20 players on the active roster and five players on injured reserve.
Fifteen of the 20 players on the active roster are returnees from the 2004 team that tied for the league's best record (11-5) and finished nine yards shy of an ArenaBowl berth, falling at Arizona in the AFL Semifinals. Five players are entering their third season with the Crush: QB John Dutton, OS Damian Harrell, WR/DB Ahmad Hawkins, FB/LB Saul Patu and OL/DL Bryant Shaw.
Only two rookies made the opening day roster, former Kansas City Chief OL/DL Tank Reese and former Denver Bronco OL/DL Chris Watton. Two other rookies, Denver native WR/LB Darcey Levy (Montbello H.S.) and DS Jabir Walker made the team, but were placed on injured reserve. The other three newcomers on the active roster are WR/LB Andy McCullough, kicker Clay Rush and member of the Crush's inaugural team, DS Delvin Hughley. All three AFL veterans played for the Indiana Firebirds in 2004.
AFL rules state that each team is limited to a 24-player roster, with 20 players declared active for each game. The league's mandatory cut down date to reach the regular season 24-man roster is today.
