Tampa Bay Storm News Release
TAMPA, FL -- The Tampa Bay Storm signed WR/DB Anthony Derricks on Monday and made numerous other roster moves to get down to the maximum 24-man active roster.
Derricks (6-0, 185, Mississippi St.), who has been one of the most dangerous kick returners in the AFL during his career, comes to the Storm after playing defensive specialist for the Indiana Firebirds in 2004. Derricks led the Firebirds with 93.0 tackles last season and also had a team high 19 pass breakups to go along with two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, and an interception.
Derricks previously played for five AFL teams in five seasons, including the New England Sea Wolves (2000), Toronto Phantoms (2001-02), Chicago Rush (2003), Colorado Crush (2003), and Indiana Firebirds (2004). He returned a league-record four kickoffs for touchdowns on June 6, 2000, at San Jose. Defensively he has led his team in tackles during four of his five seasons and has been the team leader in interceptions during three of five seasons.
Derricks will replace T.T. Toliver on the roster. Toliver was placed on the Injured Reserve list on Monday after suffering a knee injury in the Storm's scrimmage against Orlando on January 22.
Toliver joins six other Storm players who were placed on the Injured Reserve list Monday. They include OS Herb Haygood, QB Pat O'Hara, WR/DB Lawrence Richardson, FB/LB David White, OL/DL Rod Williams, and OL/DL DeMarco McNeil.
The Storm also waived six players -- defensive specialists Rovel Hamilton and Leonard Myers, WR/LB Kenny Christian, FB/LB Jeff Cogell, and linemen Jerry Johnson and Rasheid Simmons.
In all, five rookies made the Storm's final 24-man roster. Linemen DeMarcus Johnson and Omar Smith join WR/DB Lynaris Elpheage, FB/LB Elfrid Payton, and WR/LB Ronney Daniels as rookies on the opening day 24-man roster.
The other two newcomers on the 24-man roster are AFL veterans Derricks and OL/DL Ricky Hall.
The five-time World Champion Storm open the 2005 season on Sunday, January 30, when they host the defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats. Tickets for the 2005 season are on sale now at the St. Pete Times Forum Box Office and any TicketMaster location. Tickets can also be purchased by calling (813) 301-6600 or online at www.tampabaystorm.com.
