Buffalo Bisons News Release
BUFFALO, NY - Thanks to a strong five innings pitched by Hyun-Jin Ryu and a 13-hit outing from the offense, the Buffalo Bisons were able to defeat the Toledo Mud Hens 8-2 on Saturday night at Sahlen Field in downtown Buffalo.
Toledo jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Justyn-Henry Malloy sent a ball over the left center field wall, which was good for his 15th home run of the year.
The Bisons didn't waste any time on offense as they evened the score 1-1 in the bottom of the first with a Davis Schneider RBI single that scored Addison Barger. The bats stayed alive for the Herd this inning thanks to Jordan Luplow smashing a pitch over the right field fence, good for two runs scored and his seventh home run on the year, 3-1.
Buffalo's offense came out swinging again the bottom of the second as Otto Lopez singled to left field, scoring Cameron Eden and making it a 4-1 game. This RBI single brought Lopez's season totals to 30 RBIs and 70 hits in 74 games played.
Spencer Horwitz kept the home runs coming in downtown Buffalo as he hit his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning, a no-doubt shot to right field that made the game 5-1. Stevie Berman didn't let the scoring stop there as he made it 6-1 when he reached base on a throwing error which allowed Schneider to score.
Ryu, who is currently completing an MLB rehab assignment after undergoing Tommy John surgery in June of 2022, had a fantastic start for the Bisons. In five innings of work, Ryu only gave up three hits and one run and he was able to rack up five strikeouts and no walks. This game was Ryu's first win in Triple-A.
The Mud Hens made a dent in their run deficit with a solo home run off the bat of Parker Meadows in the top of the sixth, 5-2.
The Herd were quick to restore their five-run lead in the bottom of the sixth as Horwitz made it 7-2 with a double to deep left field which was far enough to score Lopez all the way from first base. Luplow kept the momentum in the Herd's favor when he singled to left, allowing Horwitz to round home and make it a 8-2 game.
Buffalo and Toledo will close out this short three-game set on Sunday afternoon at Sahlen Field. RHP Bowden Francis gets the nod for the Bisons and LHP Joey Wentz will be on the bump for the opposing Mud Hens with a 1:05 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
