COLUMBUS, OH - The Iowa Cubs (51-36) were shutout for the first time all season, falling to the Columbus Clippers (40-47) by a score of 4-0, Saturday at Huntington Park.

Both teams were held off the board for the first three innings, as Joey Cantillo and Riley Thompson each did their part. Cantillo was on a short leash, going just 2.2 innings in his first outing since July 2.

Over that span, he allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out five of the 10 batters he faced. Columbus broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning on a solo home run from Oscar Gonzalez.

The solo shot was the lone run and hit Thompson would allow, as he spun five innings, walking and striking out three along the way. The Clippers padded their lead with three runs in the sixth inning on back-to-back two out doubles from Jhonkensy Noel and Micah Pries.

Former Cub Daniel Norris spun four scoreless innings of his own, striking out five compared to just one hit allowed. James Karinchak struck out the side in a scoreless ninth inning to complete the shutout and even the series at one game apiece.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Riley Thompson spun 5.0 innings allowing just one run on one hit, a solo home run, moving his ERA to 4.97 on the year. The righty walked three batters and struck out three.

Just three I-Cubs hitters recorded a hit tonight, while all nine starters struck out at least once. Iowa was shutout for the first time since Sept. 8, 2022, in a 16-0 loss to Jacksonville.

Iowa and Columbus will play the third and final game of the series tomorrow night, with first pitch from Huntington Park scheduled for 3:05 p.m. CT.
