Moosic, Pa. - The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) claimed a 3-2 win in a pitcher's duel against the Indianapolis Indians on Saturday night at PNC Field. The triumph was the third straight for the RailRiders (20-17) and clinched the series against the Indians (17-17). The RailRiders improved to 5-3 on the nine-game homestand.
Freshly promoted from Double-A Trenton, right-hander Eric Ruth (1-0) weaved together a quality start in his 2016 debut with SWB. He allowed two runs on six hits across six innings while striking out seven to one walk. James Taillon (2-2) shouldered the loss for Indianapolis despite a career-high 11 strikeouts. The right-hander yielded three runs on five hits over six frames with one walk.
Tyler Olson and Anthony Swarzak combined to finish the last three innings. Swarzak recorded the final four outs for his second save.
Indianapolis staked an early two-run lead by loading the bases on three straight hits. Ruth surrendered both runs on consecutive groundouts, but struck out Willy Garcia to limit the damage.
Ben Gamel began the home half of the inning with a walk and raced to third on a single by Aaron Judge. With one away, Nick Swisher's sacrifice fly to center scored Gamel. Consecutive doubles by Pete Kozma and Eddy Rodriguez in the second tied the score 2-2.
Chris Parmelee opened the fourth inning by launching a high, line drive down the right field line for his third home run of the season.
Ahead 3-2, the RailRIders staved off rallies by the Indians in the fifth and seventh innings. Ruth induced a fly out to left by Jason Rogers to leave runners at the corners in the fifth. Jake Cave threw out Jacob Stallings at the plate in the seventh following a single by Pedro Florimon.
The RailRiders go for the series sweep against Indianapolis at 1:05 p.m. on "Sunday Family Funday" at PNC Field. Left-hander Dietrich Enns makes his Triple-A debut for SWB. He will oppose right-hander Wilfredo Boscan (3-3, 1.59). For tickets or more information, please call 570-969-BALL (2255) or visit swbrailriders.com.
