
Bats Come up Short, Lose 3-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Louisville Bats fell to the Columbus Clippers 3-2 on Friday night at Huntington Park in the opener of a three-game set.
Louisville right-hander Josh Smith (3-3, 2.70) took the loss after pitching six innings, striking out six but giving up five hits, three earned runs, and two walks. Dayan Diaz (2-0, 2.13) took over in the bottom of the seventh allowing one hit but did not allow a walk or run.
Starting pitcher for Columbus, lefty T.J. House (3-2, 5.93) took the win after he pitched five innings, tallying seven walks and two earned runs while collecting four strikeouts before righty Felipe Paulino (1-0, 1.80) took over the mound.
The Clippers secured the first run of the evening early with a home run by second baseman Michael Martinez in the bottom of the first inning. Columbus collected two more runs in the bottom of the second off a sacrifice fly and a single to center field.
The Bats went scoreless until the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs after catcher Chris Berset scored on a bases-loaded walk by left fielder Jesse Winker and shortstop Juan Perez scored on a double play.
Louisville placed runners on base several times throughout the remainder of the game but were unable to drive them in, going 0-for- 8 with runners in scoring position. Kyle Waldrop and Steve Selsky extended their on-base streaks to 15 and 13 games, respectively.
The Bats look to tie the series against Columbus tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. with right- hander Robert Stephenson (2-2, 2.70) set to oppose Clippers lefty Ryan Merritt (3-2, 2.54). This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
