Buffalo blanks Norfolk
May 14, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk got an impressive start from Ariel Miranda and two doubles from Christian Walker, but five Buffalo pitchers combined on a seven-hit shutout as the Bisons blanked the Tides 1-0 Saturday night at Harbor Park.
Miranda (1-3) was outstanding, as he allowed just one run on two hits over a season-high seven innings of work. Miranda, who struck out five without walking a batter, faced two batters over the minimum and needed just 78 pitches to navigate his outing. The only run he surrendered came in the sixth frame, when Tony Sanchez opened the inning with a solo home run just over the left field wall.
Walker led Norfolk's offense with two doubles, but the Tides left 11 men on base as they went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Norfolk's best chance to score came in the eighth inning, as the Tides loaded the bases with nobody out. Switch-pitcher Pat Venditte escaped the threat, however, getting two strikeouts and a pop out to keep Norfolk off the board.
Chris Leroux (1-3) and four relievers combined on the shutout for Buffalo, which has won six of its last eight games - including three via shutouts.
The Tides will wrap up their homestand Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park, with first pitch vs. Buffalo set for 1:05. T.J. McFarland (0-0, 0.00) makes his second start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Drew Hutchison (0-1, 3.62).
