Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Lehigh Valley pitching shut down Toledo on Friday by a score of 5-1 on Saturday night at Fifth Third Field. Toledo drops to 16-18 on the season. Lehigh Valley SP David Buchanan was dominant through eight innings, allowing six hits and one earned run.
The IronPigs got on the scoreboard first in the second inning following a leadoff double from 1B Brock Stassi and an RBI off the bat of 2B Darnell Sweeney. Toledo answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the second inning, after 1B Chad Huffman recorded a single and C Humberto Quintero sent him home on a long double down the right field line. Quintero was then thrown out at third on an attempt to stretch the hit to a triple. That was Quintero's fifth double on the season and third RBI.
The IronPigs looked to reclaim the lead in the third inning following two singles and a fielding error from RF Wynton Bernard. With men on second and third with no outs, Lehigh Valley took a 2-1 lead on a sac fly from Pigs SS Taylor Featherston. This run was unearned to Farmer. Lehigh Valley added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning when LF Cedric Hunter sent his second long ball of the season over the wall in right field. This homer scored 3B Carlos Alonso as well, increasing the lead to 4-1 over Toledo.
Toledo threatened in the fifth inning when Huffman led off with a double, his sixth on the year. 2B Jordany Valdepin moved the base runner to third following a groundout, but a fielder's choice caught Huffman trying to come home. The inning continued with a single from Bernard, however David Buchanan kept the home team in check by retiring CF Cameron Maybin.
Buck Farmer (4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO) took the mound for the home team tonight and exited after 4 1/3 innings. Of the 75 pitches he threw, 45 were noted as strikes. Farmer took the loss, and he is now 0-2 on the season with a 5.25 ERA.
Pitching in relief for Toledo was RHP Angel Nesbitt in the fifth and sixth innings, who allowed one earned run. Dustin Molleken took over in the seventh for a scoreless outing. Preston Guilmet, whose ERA is second-best on the team at 0.53, tossed a quick eighth inning. Logan Kensing pitched the ninth.
The Hens close out their series with the IronPigs tomorrow at Fifth Third Field at 2:05 p.m.
