Rochester, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Rochester Red Wings, 8-3, Saturday night at Frontier Field. The Red Wings scored all eight runs in the first four innings for their second straight win to start the series. The loss moves the Chiefs into a three-way tie atop the I.L. North division with Rochester and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Rochester (20-17) started its early offensive assault in the first frame of the game. James Beresford singled - the first of his four hits in the game - with one out. Max Kepler then walked and Kennys Vargas singled to load the bases against Taylor Hill. Buck Britton cleared the bases with a three-run double to give the Red Wings a 3-0 lead.
Syracuse (19-16) battled back with one of its own in the top of the second against left-hander Logan Darnell. The Chiefs loaded the bases after Matt Skole doubled, Jason Martinson walked and Kevin Keyes reached on an infield single. Caleb Ramsey followed with a ground ball to second. Beresford got the out at second base, allowing Skole to score on the fielder's choice to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Red Wings broke the game open in the bottom of the third. Beresford again started a rally with a single. After a strikeout, Vargas homered to deep right field, estimated at 429 feet, to give Rochester a 5-1 lead. The Red Wings continued the rally when Britton walked and Wilfredo Tovar singled. Two batters later, John Ryan Murphy doubled in both runners to extend the lead to 7-1.
Rochester added an eighth run in the fourth. The Red Wings loaded the bases after a Beresford single, and walks to Kepler and Britton. Tovar then blooped a single along the right-field line to score Beresford and push the lead to 8-1.
The Chiefs added two runs in the fifth. Pedro Severino and Isaac Ballou each singled to start the frame against Logan Darnell putting runners on first and third. Trea Turner then singled through the left side of the infield to score Severino. After Brian Goodwin reached on a fielder's choice, Ballou scored from third on an errant pick-off throw to first by Darnell with an unearned run.
Syracuse will try to avoid the series sweep Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Austin Voth is scheduled to start for the Chiefs opposite Tommy Milone for the Red Wings.
