Gwinnett Stripers News Release
PAWTUCKET, RI - The Gwinnett Braves (18-19) and the Pawtucket Red Sox (17-19) split a doubleheader on Saturday night at McCoy Stadium with the G-Braves winning game one 3-2 and dropping the second game by an 8-6 score.
In the first game, the G-Braves used the long ball to get the win. In the top of the second inning, Adonis Garcia (2) broke a scoreless tie by drilling a solo home run to right-center off Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez for a 1-0 lead.
After Pawtucket picked up a run in the bottom of the second off Gwinnett starter John Gant, the G-Braves went back in front 2-1 with an unearned run in the top of the third. In that inning, Sean Kazmar Jr. led off with single, moved to second on a bunt by Ozzie Albies and scored when Jace Peterson hit a ball that went between the legs of Pawtucket third baseman Marco Hernandez.
Pawtucket tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, as with a man on third, Deven Marrero cracked a double to right-center off Gant.
But the winning blow for Gwinnett came in the top of the sixth as Ronnier Mustelier (1) pounded Rodriguez's first pitch over the fence in left for a 3-2 final.
The G-Braves began the second game by scoring three in the top of the first inning. Pawtucket starter Brian Johnson walked the bases loaded and Mustelier drilled a one-out double to center to clear the bases.
But Pawtucket got right back into the game against Gwinnett starter Ryan Weber by scoring single runs in the first, second and third innings to tie the game at 3-3.
Gwinnett battled right back to take the lead in the top of the fourth as Kazmar doubled off Johnson, went to third on a groundout and scored on wild pitch to make it 4-3.
However, the bottom of the fourth proved to be the difference in game two, as Joel De La Cruz came in to relieve Weber and gave up five runs on five hits including back-to-back homers by Sam Travis (3) and Chris Marrero (6).
The G-Braves pulled to within two in the top of the fifth as Garcia (3) crushed a two-run homer to left off Johnson. Gwinnett made a run in the top of the seventh by loading the bases, but failed to push across a run.
Gant (W, 3-0) won game one by going 6.0 innings with four hits, two earned runs, two walks and six strikeouts. Chris Withrow (S, 2) went 1.0 inning with one hit and two strikeouts. In game two, Weber worked 3.0 innings with five hits, three runs (two earned), one walk and three strikeouts. De La Cruz (L, 0-1) pitched two thirds of an inning with five hits, five earned runs, one walk and two strikeouts. Brandon Cunniff went 2.1 innings with one hit and one strikeout.
Rodriguez (L, 0-3) was the Red Sox losing pitcher in game one, working 5.2 innings with seven hits, three runs (two earned) and three strikeouts. Noe Ramirez pitched 1.1 innings with one hit and one walk. In game two, Johnson (W, 2-3) picked up the win with 5.0 innings, four hits, six earned runs, five walks and three strikeouts. Bryce Brentz was the top hitter for Pawtucket, going a combined 4-for-6 with a run and one RBI.
