Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
RHP David Buchanan allowed just one run over eight innings as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (18-17) defeated the Toledo Mud Hens (16-18) by a score of 5-1 on Saturday night at Fifth Third Field in Toledo.
Buchanan (2-2) surrendered the one run on six hits while fanning one in his 8.0 IP. The right-hander retired the final 10 batters that he faced and the eight innings represents his longest outing since going 8.1 IP for Reading (AA) on July 1, 2013.
LHP James Russell (1.0 IP, 2 K) got the final three outs for manager Dave Brundage's squad.
The Pigs took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the second as Brock Stassi led off with a double, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Darnell Sweeney's RBI single.
Toledo quickly tied it at one with a run in the home half of the frame when Chad Huffman reached with a one-out single and later scored on Humberto Quintero's RBI double.
In the top of the third, Carlos Alonso drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a single, to third on an error charged to Mud Hens RF Wynton Bernard and scored on a sac fly from Taylor Featherston to give the IronPigs a 2-1 lead.
Cedric Hunter's (2-4, HR, 2 RBI, R) two-run shot off of Mud Hens starter Buck Farmer in the top of the fifth opened up a 4-1 advantage in favor of the Pigs. The home run was Hunter's second of the season.
Farmer (0-2) gave up the four runs (three earned) on five hits while walking three and fanning three in 4.1 IP.
Trailing 4-1, Toledo had the tying run at the plate with two on and two outs in the fifth, but Buchanan got Cameron Maybin to fly out to left.
Cam Perkins led off the top of the sixth with a double, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Sweeney's RBI groundout to give Lehigh Valley a 5-1 lead.
The series wraps up on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. as RHP Jake Thompson (1-4, 4.06) gets the ball for the IronPigs against Mud Hens LHP Matt Boyd (1-2, 1.80).
