Rapid City Rush News Release

(Southaven, MS) - On Thursday night, the Rush dropped their second straight shootout to the Mississippi RiverKings, 4-3. The loss marks the third shootout loss of the season for Rapid City as the Rush are just 3-for-19 in shootouts and now 1-for-5 on penalty shot attempts. Rapid City picks up one point for the shootout loss which brings the team into a tie with Colorado for first place.

Rapid City came shooting out of the gate in the first period with player/assistants Brendan Cook and Scott Wray leading the charge. Just 18 seconds into the game, an outlet pass from Jamie VanderVeeken yielded a 2-on-1 where Wray flipped a pass over the Cook who tucked the puck into the top-right corner for a 1-0 lead. At the 5:53 mark, Cook would strike again, this time on the powerplay. Les Reaney collected the puck along the half-wall, slid it to the top of the left circle for Wray who faked a shot and found Cook down low with a wide-open net. Cook's second of the game made him the first Rush player this season to reach the 20-goal mark. While going 1-for-2 in their first period powerplay chances, Rapid City also killed off all three powerplay chances against, including 1:18 of 5-on-3 hockey. Despite two goals in the opening 20 minutes, the teams combined for just nine shots on net.

The RiverKings would cut the lead in half near the midway point of the period with Kevin Truelson's fourth goal of the season. A neutral zone turnover led to a loose puck in the Rush end where Darrel Stoddard found a wide-open Truelson who buried the puck behind Miguel Beaudry. With just nine seconds remaining in the period, Scott Wray was awarded a penalty shot that was unsuccessful, marking the fourth miss on five chances this season.

Just 2:24 into the final stanza, Luke Erickson collected his 14th goal of the season to double the Rush lead once again. After a battle deep in the offensive end, Erickson's turnaround shot found its way through a screen for a 3-1 lead. At the 8:14 mark, Bobby Chaumont would once again make it a one-goal game after fighting off the Rush defense on a draw and roofing the puck from the right circle. Shortly after the goal, David Simoes was awarded a penalty shot of his own, but missed the opportunity to tie the game. On the powerplay with less than five minutes left, the Rush looked to hold onto the one-goal lead. Instead, Louis Dumont blasted home a slapshot to tie the game for the first time with just 4:08 remaining.

After no goals in the extra frame, the two teams headed to their second consecutive shootout. For the second straight game, Mark Sibbald stopped all of the Rush opportunities while Dumont and Pierce both converted on their chances for the 4-3 win.

Rapid City was perfect yet again on the penalty kill, stopping all nine chances against while scoring one powerplay goal on six opportunities. Despite stopping 36 of 39, Miguel Beaudry drops to 11-6-2 while Sibbald remains perfect at 4-0-0 with a 20 save performance.

The Rush head to Missouri to clash against the Mavericks tomorrow, January 29th, at 6:05pm MST. Tune into the broadcast on 100.3 the FOX or streaming online at www.foxradio.com.
