Altoona Curve News Release

CURVE, Pa. - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies scored four runs in the final two innings, in a game that featured two lead changes and a tie in that span, to surge past the Altoona Curve, 7-5, on Friday at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

The Curve (40-36, 5-4) and Rumble Ponies (39-36, 4-6) each lost a lead in the eighth inning and the two teams went into the ninth frame tied, 5-5, when Binghamton struck for two runs off Curve reliever Angel German (Loss, 2-2). Quinn Brodey pushed the Rumble Ponies ahead with an RBI double to right-center and Will Toffey tacked on an insurance run with a solo homer to left.

The Curve trailed 5-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth, but quickly tied the game. Alfredo Reyes led off with a double to right-center, his second double of the game, before Brett Pope smoked a pinch-hit, RBI double down the left field line. Two batters later with Bralin Jackson at the plate, Pope was picked off of second base by 'Ponies reliever Eric Hanhold (Win, 1-0), who worked out of a first and second, no outs jam before tossing a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.

Altoona led Binghamton, 4-3, heading into in the top of the eighth inning but with two outs Barrett Barnes ripped a go-ahead, two-run homer to left off Beau Sulser. It was Barnes' second homer in as many games and only the second long ball allowed by Sulser this season.

Binghamton starter David Peterson held the Curve scoreless through four innings but Altoona broke out the bats for a four-run fifth. Mitchell Tolman plated the first run with an RBI single to center, Jared Oliva added a go-ahead, two-run single to center and Robbie Glendinning finished the rally with an RBI double to right. The trio of Curve hitters combined for six hits, four RBIs and two walks on the night. Peterson, meanwhile, lasted just five innings and gave up four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Pedro Vasquez started for the Curve and allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in six innings. He allowed a two-run homer to Patrick Mazeika in the sixth and a sacrifice fly to Gavin Cecchini in the third. The right-hander logged his seventh quality start and tied his season-high in strikeouts.

The Curve and Rumble Ponies continue their five-game series with a double-header on Saturday. Game 1 is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Left-hander Brandon Waddell (0-0, 3.38) will get the ball for the Curve against Binghamton right-hander Mickey Jannis (3-1, 2.83) in game one. The Curve will go with left-hander Sean Brady (3-7, 5.09) in game two against right-hander Joe Zanghi (2-1, 1.71) for Binghamton.

The second game of Saturday's double-header is another Allegheny Yinzers night and features a Yinzers License Plate giveaway for the first 500 fans, presented by ARC Credit Union & The Award Man. Pittsburgh-style concessions upgrades will be available as fans can add fries or slaw to a burger with a side of pierogies. The Jared Box Project Drive continues and it's also Scout Night and Indiana County Night at the ballpark.
