RubberDucks Offense Explodes Behind Franmil Reyes Home Run to Defeat Bowie Baysox, 12-5
July 1, 2021 - Eastern League (EL)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Despite falling behind early to the Bowie Baysox, the RubberDucks' offense exploded for twelve runs on 17 hits, including a Franmil Reyes two-run, 403-foot home run in the fifth inning to kick off nine unanswered runs and give Akron a 12-5 win Thursday night at Canal Park.
Turning Point
Akron trailed 5-3 going into the fifth inning when Oscar Gonzalez doubled into the FirstEnergy power alley in left field, extending his hit streak to 16 consective games. Franmil Reyes immediately followed the double from Gonzalez by crushing the first pitch he saw deep to left field and over the Akron-Canton Airport Ribbon Board for his 2nd home run in as many games to knot the score at 5-5. Richie Palacios then hit a sharp line drive down into the right field corner and showcased his speed as he legged it out for a triple, the Ducks' third straight extra base hit. Chris Roller struck next when he hit a grounder that bounced over the drawn-in shortstop's head and brought home Palacios to give Akron their first lead of the game, 6-5. Later in the inning, Daniel Schneeman hit a bloop single that dropped for a base hit and brought home two more runs to make it a five-run inning and firmly placing the Ducks ahead 8-5.
Mound Presence
In making only his second start of the season for Akron, Eric Mock only lasted three and a third as the Bowie Baysox jumped ahead early with five runs on six hits, despite four strikeouts from the Ducks' righthander. The Ducks would call on Skylar Arias to pitch in relief of Mock. Arias pitched dominantly for 2.2 innings not allowing a hit and striking out three while issuing two walks. Dakody Clemmer would take over pitching duties in the seventh inning and continued the streak of scoreless innings for the RubberDucks relievers as he struck out two in two innings of work. Juan Mota slammed the door shut for the Ducks, striking two of the three batters he faced in the ninth inning.
Duck Tales
The Baysox looked to make up for their scoreless outing on Wednesday and did just that in the first inning as they brought three runs across the plate. After Patrick Dorian had an RBI double, Robert Neustrom took the first pitch of his at-bat deep to right and into the Akron bullpen to make it a 3-0 lead for Bowie.
The Ducks got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning as Richie Palacios smoked a line drive into right field, allowing Steven Kwan to race around third and score. The deficit was cut to one in the second when Daniel Schneeman also hit one into the RubberDucks bullpen for his first home run in just his second game with Akron.
Bowie would get the lead back up to three in the fourth courtesy of a rbi double by Kyle Stowers and a single by Greg Cullen, his first hit with the Baysox on the season.
The RubberDucks had a huge 5th inning as they scored five runs to gain a 8-5 lead. Franmil Reyes started it with a 2-run bomb to left that went 403 feet and left the bat at 104 mph. Chris Roller would bring home a run with a single and Daniel Schneeman continued his impressive day when he hit a bloop single into right and brought home two more runs to cap off a 5-run inning where the ducks had 6 hits. Oscar Gonzalez would hit his 12th home run of the season in the 6th to make it 9-5 for Akron. Steven Kwan would have an rbi fielder's choice in the seventh to make it 8 runs across 4 innings for Akron. Roller and Bo Naylor would each have an RBI in the 8th inning that extended the lead to 12-5 and made it 10 runs in 4 innings.
Notebook
Oscar Gonzalez once again had a hit in the game, a double in the 5th, which extends his hitting streak to 16 games, the longest by any player in the Indians organization this season, and the second longest in RubberDucks history, 8 behind Tyler Krieger in 2018 who had 24 games in a row with a hit. He also had his 12th home run of the season, tying him for third in the Northeast league for that category. He also recorded his 37th rbi of the season on the homer, tying him for second in the league. Franmil Reyes had his second game in a row with a home run for the RubberDucks as he hit a 2-run blast in the fifth inning. In his second game with the RubberDucks, Daniel Schneeman had a very productive second game with the Ducks as he had a home run and 3 RBIs on the night. The RubberDucks also had 17 hits, which is tied for the second most hits by them this season, the other being on June 9th against the Altoona Curve, a game they lost 14-13. Their season high is 18, which they had against Bowie in a 17-9 win on June 19th in extra innings
Time of Game: 3:17 ... Attendance: 2427
