Edmonton (2-12-1-0) would open the scoring on Friday, with German-born forward Luca Hauf (2) picking up a turnover deep in the Victoria (3-12-3-0) zone and driving it home to give his side an early 1-0 advantage at the 9:00 mark of the first.
The Oil Kings would keep up the pressure in the second half of the frame, increasing their lead to 2-0 on a goal by forward Dawson Seitz at 13:26.
That lead would hold until late in the second period when Royals forward Jake Poole (9) would use a powerplay goal to cut the Edmonton lead in half at the 15:36 mark. Forwards Carter Dereniwsky and Caleb Willms would collect assists on the play.
However, the Oil Kings would respond with a power play marker of their own by forward Carson Golder (3) to bring the score to 3-1 at 17:52 .
The back-and forth action would continue as the second period wound to a close, with Royals forward Alex Edwards (2) bringing his team back within a goal at the 19:20 mark. The game would enter the third with Edmonton holding a 3-2 advantage.
Defenceman Luke Shipley and forward Reggie Newman recorded assists on the goal by Edwards.
Forward Anthony Wilson (2) would keep the momentum going for Victoria to start the third, tying the game at 3-3 at the 3:56 mark. Reggie Newman would pick up his second point of the night with an assist on the goal.
Both teams would trade power plays near the end of the frame, however neither was able to find the back of the net and the game would head to overtime with the score tied 3-3.
