Chiefs Fall 7-2 to Cougars in First Night of Back-To-Back Matchups

Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs couldn't snap their losing streak Friday night, as they fell to the Prince George Cougars 7-2 in the first night of back-to-back matchups.

The Cougars were quick to get on the board, with Koehn Ziemmer scoring the first goal of the game at just 2:23 in the first period.

The Chiefs answered halfway through the frame when forward Ty Cheveldayoff stole the puck away from a Cougar behind the net and got it to veteran Cade Hayes. Hayes took a shot and Chase Bertholet was there to clean up the rebound and shave Prince George's lead to one. Spokane held on for the rest of the period and went into the first break down just 2-1, outshooting the Cougars 17-7.

Prince George controlled the second period, scoring four unanswered goals. It started with a power play goal from Ethan Samson just under two minutes into the frame. Carlin Dezainde followed that up with his second goal of the season, which was initially waived off due to the play being whistled dead right before the shot. Caden Brown padded the lead right after that to make it 4-1, Cougars.

Chase Wheatcroft then scored on a penalty shot at 18:17 to give Prince George a 5-1 advantage.

Spokane again put up 17 shots on goal in the middle frame, but none found the twine until 19:59 when team captain Raegan Wiles capitalized on the man advantage with a snipe from the slot to make it 5-2. Bertholet and Tommaso De Luca earned assists on the play, marking Bertholet's second point of the night.

That was as close as the Chiefs would get, though, as the Cougars added two more unanswered goals in the final frame - first from Ondrej Becher at 9:54 and then from Wheatcroft at 15:57.

Special teams struggled throughout the game, going 1-for-5 on the power play and 0-for-2 on the penalty kill. The Chiefs outshot the Cougars 41-25.

Rookie netminder Cooper Michaluk got the start in net for Spokane and stopped 18-of-25 shots faced.
