Round Two
Last night featured what might have been the Winterhawks' best game of the season. A balanced attack and some steady play from Dante Giannuzzi between the pipes saw Portland take a 5-1 win over the visiting Thunderbirds, setting the stage for a thrilling round two this evening. In hostile territory, though, the Hawks will need to keep composure after a testy affair at the VMC last night.
"These games are huge, they get heated really quickly...a lot of preparation goes into them in order to come out on the winning side, but at the same time you don't want to overthink, just kind of play your game and play smart. But you do need to prepare for it," said Hawks netminder Dante Giannuzzi.
Rising temperatures are nothing new between Portland and Seattle, but the team that's able to keep its cool tonight is likely to prevail.
Starting Hot
It wasn't the game-winner, but Ryan McCleary's goal just 20 seconds into Friday's contest set the tone for a Winterhawks team that has made a habit of coughing up the first goal as of late. With a "1" up on the board, the Winterhawks built confidence while playing from in front, rattling off three more consecutive markers en route to a comfortable 5-1 victory.
"Obviously a big talking point, we gotta get out quick. They're a really good team, so having a good start, coming out fast, getting a few hits and trying to take the game to them (is important)," said Winterhawks defenseman Ryan McCleary.
Most teams will preach the importance of getting the first goal, but the Winterhawks now know firsthand just how strong they can play when they pick up an early lead - look for a fast start from the visitors in Kent this evening.
