Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - Rhett Melnyk provided the heroics on Friday night as the Edmonton Oil Kings snagged a thrilling 4-3 win in overtime over the Victoria Royals at Rogers Place.

The Oil Kings roared to a 2-0 first period lead as they jumped on the Royals in the opening 20 minutes.

Luca Hauf opened the score exactly nine minutes into the frame after he jumped on a loose puck in the slot of the Victoria zone, spun to his forehand and fired a shot under the pads of Tyler Palmer for his second goal of the season.

Dawson Seitz added to the Edmonton lead at the 13:12 mark after he powered his way through some neutral zone traffic, sped in on a breakaway, and hoisted the puck over the glove of Palmer for his first tally of the campaign.

In the second period, it would be tight-checking for 15 minutes where neither team would find any offence but a late power play for the Royals would create a flood of goals just ahead of the second intermission.

Victoria got on the board at the 15:36 mark after Jake Poole finished off a nice three-way passing play between himself, Carter Dereniwsky and Caleb Willms.

Edmonton answered back just over two minutes later with a power play goal of their own after former Royal Carson Golder snapped home a loose puck in front of the Victoria net for his second goal in as many games and third of the season.

Before the period was out, the Royals were able to draw back to within a goal after Alex Edwards found the back of the net on a shot from the right-circle.

In the third period, the Royals were able to level the score thanks to a quick goal from Anthony Wilson.

Neither team would be able to find a go-ahead goal in regulation so off to three-on-three overtime they would go.

In the bonus period, the Oil Kings would possess the puck for the majority of the period and with just over a minute left, Melnyk walked the puck into the left-circle and with pin-point accuracy, lasered a shot into the top corner over the left arm of Palmer.

Kolby Hay finished the night making 29 saves, while Palmer turned away 25 for the Royals. Edmonton went 1-for-3 on the power play, the Royals were 1-for-4.

Next up, the Oil Kings head out on a four-game Saskatchewan road trip next week starting in Moose Jaw on Tuesday night when they battle the Warriors at 6:00 P.M. MT.

The Edmonton Oil Kings next home game is Tuesday, November 15 when they welcome the Red Deer Rebels to Rogers Place at 7:00 P.M.
