Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - The Omaha Royals defeated the Tacoma Rainiers for the third time in as many games Tuesday night, winning 6-4. A crowd of 2,955 at Rosenblatt Stadium watched the Royals win their fourth straight and pick up the eighth victory in their past nine games, while the Rainiers dropped their seventh in a row and lost for the 12th time in 14 contests.
Omaha first baseman Scott Thorman broke a 3-3 tie by leading off the bottom of the fifth with a home run off the batters eye in center. It was Thorman's first home in 27 games, giving him 16 on the season. The long ball came off Tacoma starter Ryan Feierabend (3-5), who took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings.
Irving Falu provided the Royals with some needed insurance runs in the seventh, as he greeted reliever Josh Luecke with a two-run single, scoring Thorman and Lucas May who had each coaxed walks from Anthony Varvaro earlier in the inning.
All of Tacoma's runs came via home runs: Mike Carp hit a two-run shot in the first, Justin Smoak tied the game briefly with a solo shot - his second of the series - in the fifth, and Brad Nelson hit a leadoff round-tripper in the eighth to make it 6-4. That was the only hit allowed by Omaha right-hander Federico Castaneda in 2.2 otherwise dominant innings as he notched a season-high seven strikeouts.
Gaby Hernandez (9-6) got the win, despite surrendering Smoak's fifth inning homer. It was the Pacific Coast League-leading 30th home run allowed by Hernandez, but the only one he has given up in 9.1 innings over four relief appearances since being moved out of the Royals starting rotation.
Josh Rupe finished with a scoreless ninth for his eighth save, as he worked around a two-base error with one away on a dropped fly ball by left fielder David Lough. It was just the second error of the year for Lough, but both have come in the past three games. At the plate, Lough continued to sizzle in August with three more hits; he's 10-for-16 in this series and 13-for-26 on the homestand.
Jai Miller continued his raking ways as well, going 3-for-4 with a two-run single in the first inning that hit off a yellow pad extending above the left field wall - just missing his seventh home run in the seventh game of this 6-1 homestand. On the stand, Miller is 14-for-28 with six homers and 13 RBI.
Omaha (64-54), which prior to this series had lost 14 straight to Tacoma (61-56) at Rosenblatt dating back to April 2002 will try to close out a four-game sweep Wednesday at 12:05 p.m. Rainiers righty Andy Baldwin (7-6, 5.80) faces Royals lefty Edgar Osuna (0-2, 20.57).
