Sky Sox Win on Walk-Off, 2-1
August 10, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox rallied to a walk-off win over the Oklahoma City RedHawks on Monday night at Security Service Field in front of 2,122 fans. The victory evened the series at one game apiece.
For the second time in the series, the RedHawks got on the board first by plating a run in the second. Left fielder Chris Davis started the inning with a double but Josh Muecke retired the next two batters on a groundout and a strike out to seemingly strand Davis at second before Hernan Iribarren ripped a sharp single to left to drive in the run.
The Sox would tie it up in the seventh on a pair of hits from the bottom of the order. With one out, catcher Michael McKenry singled on a blooper to shallow right field to bring Chris Frey to the plate. Frey then took a pitch the other way and drove it down into the left field corner. As the ball bounced around, McKenry was able to chug around the bases and score a few steps before the throw home. The throw home got away from the catcher for an error that allowed Frey to move to third with one out but the Oklahoma bullpen worked out of the jam with two flight outs to end the inning.
The same set of characters would walk to the stage in the bottom of the ninth as the bullpens traded zeros in the eighth and Matt Reynolds retired all three of the batters he faced in the Oklahoma half of the ninth. McKenry led off the inning and once again hit a shallow fly ball into right field of Clay Rapada that looked like a sure out but right fielder Brandon Boggs over ran the ball and it landed just behind him in fair territory to allow McKenry to reach second on an error. Frey then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move McKenry to third bringing Jonathan Herrera to the plate. Oklahoma brought on fire-baller Pedro Strop to try and shut down the rally but Herrera served an 0-1 pitch down the left field line for the game-winning, walk-off single. It was Herrera's second walk-off single of the home stand as he also delivered a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth on August 6 against New Orleans.
The late heroics made a winner of Reynolds (1-3), who picks up his first Triple-A win, and a loser of Rapada (1-1) who gave up the unearned run in the ninth.
Game three of the four-game series is set for 7:05 PM tomorrow night with RH Jhoulys Chacin (3-2, 1.88) taking the hill for the Sox against RH Doug Mathis (4-4, 4.78).
