RH Doug Mathis (4-4, 4.78) vs. RH Jhoulys Chacin (3-2, 1.88)
TONIGHT: The RedHawks continue their series in Colorado Springs with the third of a 4-game set against the Sky Sox. The series is 1-1 after the Sox won 2-1 last night on a 1-out, ninth-inning single by Jonathan Herrera to plate the winning run. It was OKC's fifth walk-off loss to go with 6 such wins. The RedHawks are 15-16 in one-run games. The top 3 teams in the American South lost, so OKC's leading margin remains 3 games over Albuquerque and 4 over New Orleans. Righthander Doug Mathis is slated to start for the RedHawks against Jhoulys Chacin.
STREAKS END IN 2-1 LOSS: RedHawks hitters drew twice as many walks (6) as they had hits (3) last night, matching their season low for hits in a game. It was their fourth 3-hit effort and second in a 9-inning contest. Esteban German had an 18-game on-base streak snapped. Matt Brown's 21-game road on-base streak was halted and Brandon Boggs saw the end of a 22-game road on-base streak. It was only the second time since May 24 that Boggs has failed to reach base in a start, the other being Aug. 3. Boggs has reached by hit, walk or hit-by-pitch in 60 of his last 62 starts. He is third in the PCL in walks with 70 and ninth in on-base percentage at .403.
BALLARD BIG IN SPOT START: Michael Ballard made a spot start last night replacing Omar Beltre, who is being skipped this time through the rotation to ease his innings load. Ballard pitched 5 scoreless innings last night, allowing 4 hits. Including a scoreless 3 innings in relief from his previous appearance at Salt Lake Aug. 4, Ballard has tossed 8 consecutive scoreless innings while allowing 6 hits.
DAVIS DOUBLES: Chris Davis returned to the hit column last night by going 1-for-4 with a double after seeing his 14-game hitting streak snapped on Sunday. Davis is 9-for-26 (.346) with 7 RBIs, 6 walks and 8 runs in 8 games since being optioned by Texas at the end of July. Davis is second in the PCL in hitting (.353) and seventh in on-base percentage (.409).
STROP'S STREAK INTACT: OKC closer Pedro Strop allowed a game-winning single to the only batter he faced (Jonathan Herrera) in last night's ninth, but the unearned run was charged to previous pitcher Clay Rapada. Strop has gone 10 outings and 8.2 innings without allowing a run dating to the All-Star break and his most recent option from Texas. Strop has allowed 5 hits in those 8.2 innings with 16 strikeouts. Until last night, Strop had fanned at least 1 batter in 10 consecutive appearances.
ODDS AND ENDS: The loss last night dropped the RedHawks' record to 3-13 in Monday games...OKC is 4-5 in August, yet has tacked a half-game onto its division lead, from 2.5 games to 3.0...OKC has limited its opposition to 2 runs 19 times, going 16-3 in those games.
KIRKMAN PITCHER OF WEEK: OKC lefty Michael Kirkman is the PCL Pitcher of the Week for the period ending Sunday. It's the second such honor for Kirkman, who also received it for the week ending June 13. In 2 starts last week, Kirkman went 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA and dropped his ERA (currently 3.00) to third in the league.
