Royals Trade D-Man and Acquire Forward

READING, PA – The Reading Royals, the ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, have announced that they have traded the rights to defenseman Aaron Gionet to the Pensacola Ice Pilots for future considerations. In addition, the Royals have acquired the rights to forward Scooter Smith from the Trenton Titans for future considerations. Royals general manager Ray Delia also announced that the Royals American Hockey League affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs have assigned defenseman Doug Nolan to Reading and defenseman Tomas Slovak has been assigned to Reading from the NHL's Colorado Avalanche via the Hershey Bears.

Gionet had appeared in eight games with the Royals this season. He racked up 13 minutes in penalties. The 2000 sixth round draft choice of the Tampa Bay Lightning played with the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League prior to joining Reading. The rookie defenseman had over 200 minutes in penalties three of his last four seasons with the Blazers. Rookie forward Scooter Smith comes to the Royals after appearing in eleven games this season with the Trenton Titans. The Calgary, Alberta native is scoreless and has posted four minutes in penalties so far this season. Smith is expected to be in the line up this weekend for Reading.

The Royals recently acquired Nolan from the Dayton Bombers in exchange for forward Geoff Peters. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound defenseman has appeared in 11 games with the Monarchs and registered 14 penalty minutes. Nolan arrived in Reading on Monday and is expected to be in the line up this Friday and Saturday.

The Colorado Avalanche has assigned 20-year-old defenseman Tomas Slovak to Reading. Slovak is currently under contract with the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League. He attended the Colorado rookie and Hershey Bears' training camps. In 13 games with the Bears this season he has a goal and three points along with two penalty minutes. Slovak arrived in Reading today and is expected to skate with the club tomorrow.
