Walby Named InGlasCo ECHL Player of the Week
November 18, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release
PRINCETON, N.J. - Mississippi right wing Steffon Walby is the InGlasCo ECHL Player of the Week for November 10-16.
The 6-0 and 200-pound Walby scored two goals, nine assists and was +6 in three road games to move into the lead in the ECHL scoring race with 25 points while moving into a tie for the ECHL lead with 17 assists. Walby, who was voted as a starter for the Southern Conference in the 2003 ECHL All-Star Game, ranks second in the league with eight power-play assists and is tied for second with teammate Jim Baxter with 10 power-play points.
"It's always nice to receive an ECHL accolade," said Walby, on earning his third InGlasCo ECHL Player of the Week honor. "It shows how well our line has been clicking. Jeff Hutchins was the runner up two weeks ago, Brent Gauvreau won the award last week. As a team, we've come out pretty well on this road trip (six games) and we're staying with the pack in the Central Division."
A native of Lodi, Wisconsin, Walby scored a goal and had three assists in a 6-3 win at South Carolina on Tuesday. In a 5-4 win at Florence on Friday, he scored a goal and had four assists to tie the ECHL season high for points in a game. He closed out his week with two assists in the Sea Wolves' 5-4 shootout loss at South Carolina. Walby has an assist in each of his last five games (12 assists) and has also scored three goals during those five games.
For the second consecutive season, Walby was named First Team All-ECHL at right wing in 2002-03 after tying for the league lead with seven shorthand goals and finishing second in the league with 10 game-winning goals. He tied for second in the league with 42 goals and 18 power-play goals while ranking fifth in scoring with a team-leading 89 points (42g-47a). In 2001-02, Walby became the first Mississippi player to be named First Team All-ECHL honors when he shared right wing honors with Rick Kowalsky.
Runners Up: Charles Linglet, Alaska (4 gp, 2g, 6a, 8 pts, +6), John Snowden, Texas (3 gp, 4g, 2a, 6 pts, +7) and Randy Rowe, Peoria (3 gp, 3g, 1a, 4 pts, +1).
