Reading Royals News Release
Greenville, SC - The Reading Royals of the ECHL (4-3-1-09, 2nd Atlantic Division), affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, defeated the Greenville Road Warriors (4-4-0-08, 3rd South Division), 7-3, at Bi-Lo Center in Greenville, South Carolina. The Royals fell behind early but rang off six straight and ended up with seven goals from seven different players to remain unbeaten in regulation on the road (3-0-1-0). The win was Coach Larry Courville's 100th win in his 190th game as the head coach for the Royals (100-74-16).
Royals' goaltender Karel St. Laurent (1-1-0-0, 44/47) faced an onslaught of shots, particularly in a twenty-shot third, but held tight to register his first win as a Royal. Greenville's Nic Riopel (4-1-0-0, 28/33 in 34:28) was pulled after Reading's fifth goal and sustained his first loss of the year. Jason Missiaen (no decision, 10/12 in 25:32) gave up a goal on the first shot he faced, but settled down and gave the Road Warriors a chance to mount a third period charge. Reading scored the team's sixth goal while playing with the man advantage (1-4). Two of Greenville's three goals came on the power play (2-3).
Greenville struck on their first power play chance of the night 8:21 into the game, when Justin Bowers slid a pass from deep on the right side through the low slot that deflected off of Brett Robinson's stick and landed in the left circle where Jeff Prough fired a one-timer that tumbled through for his sixth of the season. Reading tied the game at one 17:29 into the first when Chad Painchaud fired off the rush. Riopel made the original stop, but Casey Haines, crashing the net, banged the rebound on goal. Riopel made the save on that as well, but Haines batted the rebound of that shot out of mid-air and in for his second of the year.
The Royals exploded for five in the second, starting 2:37 in when Marvin Degon charged end-to-end, made a power move to the top of the crease, and with one hand on the stick slid it through Riopel's legs for his second of the year. 6:39 into the period, Reading took a 3-1 lead when Derrick LaPoint fired a wrist pass from the left point to a spot just below the hash-marks where Rob Shearer, floating through the slot, was able to angle a deflection high glove side for his second of the year. Forty-two seconds later, the Royals got what proved to be the game winner off the rush when Dennis McCauley fired a shot from the left side that hit the shin-pad of a Greenville defender and deflected directly to the stick of Denny Urban, who was coming down the middle and picked his spot low glove side for his second of the season.
The Royals added some insurance and chased Riopel when Ryan Cruthers finished a three-on-two break. Yannick Riendeau carried deep on the right side and slid a cross-crease pass that Cruthers drilled home for his second of the season. 1:14 later, Reading converted on their first shot on Jason Missiaen while playing on the power play. Again, it was Riendeau who threaded a perfect pass to the top of the crease where Olivier Labelle ripped it home for his team leading fourth of the season.
Greenville pushed hard in the third and hit pay-dirt 9:56 into the period when Prough bagged his second power play goal of the game-and seventh of the season, four of which have been against Reading. The Road Warriors cut the Royals lead to three (6-3) 15:32 into the final period, when Justin Bowers finished a two-on-one (after a perfect dish from Prough) with a rocket out of the left circle. Forty-six seconds later, Reading re-gained the four goal cushion when Cruthers fed Chad Painchaud off the rush snap shot bar-and-in rocket. The Royals held on from that point forward to register the team's third come-from-behind win of the year.
The Royals continue a five game road trip tomorrow (Saturday, November 5, 2011 @ 7:05 pm) in Gwinnett, Georgia, against the Gwinnett Gladiators. The game night broadcast will start at 6:35 pm with the Red Robin Gourmet Burger Pre-Game Warm-up Show on ESPN Radio 1240 am in Reading. Streaming audio is available free of charge courtesy of America One through the Royals' website, www.royalshockey.com. As with all Royals road games, next Friday's contest in Greenville will be televised in Berks County on BCTV courtesy of Boscov's Travel and the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.
