Manchester Monarchs News Release
LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
Vs. Binghamton (2/23): Goaltender Adam Hauser recorded his fourth shutout of the season as the Monarchs blanked the Binghamton Senators, 2-0, on Monday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Hauser stopped 22 shots for the victory. Left wing Jeff Giuliano recorded his sixth goal of the year and left wing Noah Clarke tallied his 20th goal.
Vs. Portland (2/25): The Monarchs skated to a 0-0 tie with the Portland Pirates on Wednesday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The scoreless tie was the first in team history. Goaltender Adam Hauser made 15 saves on the evening including the save of the game with less than a minute left in overtime on center Brooks Laich's breakaway. Pirates' goaltender Maxime Ouellet faced 36 shots.
Vs. Utah (2/28): The Monarchs earned one point and remained in second place in the Atlantic Division even though they fell to the Utah Grizzles, 3-2, in overtime on Saturday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Center Yanick Lehoux (1-1=2) and right wing Pavel Rosa (0-2=2) each had two-point games. Defenseman Bryan Muir rifled his wrist shot past goaltender Jason Bacashihua for his eighth goal of the season. His goal gave the Monarchs a 2-1 first period lead. The Grizzlies tied the game later in the period. Former Monarch center Rob Valicevic scored the game-winning goal at the 3:33 mark of overtime. Goaltender Adam Hauser took his 12th loss of the season (25 saves).
Vs. Providence (2/29): Defenseman Rich Brennan's power play slap shot in overtime gave the Providence Bruins a 3-2 victory over the Manchester Monarchs on Sunday afternoon at the Verizon Wireless Arena. For the second consecutive night, a former Monarch came back to haunt his old team with an overtime game-winner. Defenseman Maxim Kuznetsov recorded his first goal of the year and right wing Pavel Rosa tallied his 23rd. Center Andre Savage's power play goal midway through the first period ended a lengthy Monarchs' penalty-killing streak. The Monarchs had killed off 25 consecutive penalties over a span of seven games. Goaltender Adam Hauser made 26 saves.
TEAM NOTEs
Right wing Pavel Rosa was in on four of the Monarchs' six goals last week.
Rosa became the first Monarch to score at least 60 points in consecutive seasons with his second assist against the Utah Grizzlies on Saturday night.
Rosa, the Los Angeles Kings' second-round selection (50th overall) in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, needs just two points to match his output for all of last season when he finished second on the Monarchs in scoring with 63 points (28-35=63).
Rosa enters this week's action ranked second in the AHL with 61 points (23-38=61) in 57 games. His assist total is tied for second best in the circuit and his plus-20 rating is fifth best in the league.
Rosa needs just 13 points to become the Monarchs' all-time single season scoring leader. Left wing Eric Healey, who played two seasons with the Monarchs (2001-03), is the current record holder after scoring 73 points (42-31=73) during the 2002-03 season.
Rosa is also chasing center Steve Kelly (separated shoulder) for the Monarchs' all-time single season assist record. He has 38 assists. Kelly set the club record with 44 assists last season.
The Monarchs enter this week's action unbeaten in regulation in their last seven games (3-0-2-2). Their current streak is the second longest of the season. The Monarchs were unbeaten in regulation in eight games (6-0-1-1) from Sunday, October 26 through Saturday, November 15.
The Monarchs have just one regulation loss in their last 11 games (5-1-3-2). They've allowed the opposition more than three goals just once (4-4 tie with the Worcester IceCats on February 11) in the 11 games.
The Monarchs are unbeaten in regulation in five straight home games (2-0-1-2). The unbeaten in regulation home streak is the second longest of the season. The Monarchs went unbeaten in regulation in 10 straight home games from November 1 through December 5 (9-0-0-1).
The Monarchs return to the road this weekend with games at Lowell on Friday and at Portland on Saturday afternoon. The Monarchs are unbeaten in three straight road games (2-0-1-0). The streak is the longest of the season. They've outscored the opposition 7-2 in the three contests.
Sunday's overtime loss to the Providence Bruins was just the second this season for the Monarchs in games in which they took a lead into the final period on home ice (12-0-2-2). The Monarchs also lost, 4-3, in overtime to the Springfield Falcons after taking a lead into the second intermission on November 15. The Monarchs are 19-0-2-2 overall in games in which they've taken a lead into the final period this season.
The Monarchs lengthy penalty kill streak ended on Sunday with the Bruins scoring on their first power play attempt. The Monarchs entered Sunday's game with 25 straight kills. The streak dated back to the third period of their game against the Bruins on Sunday, February 15 (seven games).
Thanks to Sunday's overtime loss, the Monarchs are 5-5-2 in 12 all-time meetings with the Bruins at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Providence is the only team in the Atlantic Division that doesn't have a losing record at the Verizon Wireless Arena over the past three seasons.
Monarchs All-Time On Home Ice Against:
Hartford: 4-3-0
Lowell: 13-5-0
Portland: 7-3-4
Providence: 5-5-2
Springfield: 4-1-1
Worcester: 7-4-0
The Monarchs skated in their first-ever scoreless tie on Wednesday against the Portland Pirates.
Goaltender Adam Hauser stopped 15 shots en route to his team-leading fifth shutout of the season on Wednesday. He owns half of the Monarchs' team record 10 shutouts this season.
Both of left wing Noah Clarke's scoring streaks ended with Wednesday's scoreless tie. The rookie from LaVerne, Califorina, a ninth-round pick (250th overall) of the Los Angeles Kings in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, entered Wednesday's game against the Pirates with a four-game goal streak and a seven-game scoring streak (6-3=9). Both streaks were the longest of his career.
Thanks to his recent hot streak, Clarke is within two points of St. John's Kyle Wellwood and Milwaukee's Timofe Shishkanov for the rookie scoring lead in the AHL. Through 56 games, Clarke has 39 points (20-19=39). Wellwood has 41 points (13-28=41) in 56 games and Shishkanov has 41 points (22-19=41) in 57 games.
Clarke is the only rookie to ever score 20 goals in a season for the Monarchs. He collected his 20th of the season on Monday against the Binghamton Senators.
Defenseman Denis Grebeshkov, on recall with the Kings, collected his first NHL point by assisting on former Monarch Derek Armstrong's goal on Sunday against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. The Kings lost, 6-3, to the Ducks. Grebeshkov made his NHL debut the night before when the Kings hosted the Ducks at STAPLES Center.
Goaltender Mathieu Chouinard, also on recall with the Kings, made his NHL debut on Sunday against the Ducks, stopping each of the two shots he faced in relief of former Monarch Cristobal Huet.
Chouinard is the 17th player to see action for both the Monarchs and the Kings this season. Seventeen players also saw action for both teams during the 2002-03 season.
