Amerks' Pominville named Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week
March 1, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... The American Hockey League announced today that Rochester Americans right wing Jason Pominville has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending February 29, 2004. In three games, Pominville scored five goals (including two game-winners) and assisted on one more as Rochester won all three outings.
After missing 12 games plus the 2004 Pepsi AHL All-Star Classic due to a concussion, Pominville returned to the Rochester lineup on Friday and scored the game-winning goal in the Americans' 4-3 victory over Hershey, and a night later, he scored again during a 5-1 win in Cleveland. Pominville saved his best for Sunday, when at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, home of the parent Sabres, he recorded his first pro hat trick to pace the Amerks to a 6-0 win over Syracuse.
In recognition of his achievement, Pominville will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to the Rochester Youth Hockey League in Pominville's name.
Selected by Buffalo in the second round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft (55th overall), Pominville has recorded 46 points in 46 games with Rochester this season, ranking first in the AHL with 18 power play goals and tied for third with 25 goals overall. The 21-year-old native of Repentigny, Que., recorded 13 goals and 21 assists in 73 games as a rookie with the Amerks last year, and made his NHL debut with the Sabres on Dec. 27, 2003, at Washington.
Other nominees for Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week include Albany left wing Steve Kariya, Bridgeport right wing Jeff Hamilton, Chicago center Brian Swanson, Cleveland goaltender Nolan Schaefer, Grand Rapids center Jeff Nelson, Hamilton right wing Alexander Perezhogin, Houston center Rickard Wallin, Manchester right wing Pavel Rosa, Milwaukee center Greg Classen, Norfolk center Ajay Baines, Philadelphia defenseman John Slaney, Springfield defenseman Nic Bilotto, Syracuse defenseman Derrick Walser, Toronto goaltender Stephen Valiquette, Utah goaltender Jason Bacashihua and Worcester defenseman Tom Koivisto.
