March 1, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release
Last Week: The BEARS began three games in three days by dropping a 4-3 decision at Rochester Friday night. Eric Perrin enjoyed a three point night while Pascal Trepanier scored a pair of third period goals, but it wasn't enough as the Americans completed the two game season series sweep. HERSHEY returned home Saturday and enjoyed an offensive explosion with a 6-3 victory over the Albany River Rats. David Masse scored two goals to pace the attack, while Marc Busenburg, Dennis Bonvie and Eric Perrin all enjoyed multi-point nights. Tom Lawson made 36 saves to win his 12th game of the season. Shane Willis picked up the game-winning goal in the second period. It was Shane's 20th goal of the season. On Sunday, the Binghamton Senators came to town for a key East Division battle, and the BEARS scored the first four goals of the game to win 4-2. Ryan Craig, who had not scored a goal since November 8th against Philadelphia, scored two goals in the second period to lead the offensive charge. Brett Clark and Pascal Trepanier scored power play goals as Tom Lawson won his second game in as many days. The back to back wins vaulted the BEARS three points in front of Norfolk for fourth place and eight points in front of both Binghamton and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for fifth place in the East.
Notables: The wins at GIANT Center Saturday and Sunday gave HERSHEY back-to-back wins at home for the first time this season. Travis Brigley was assigned to the BEARS late on Friday afternoon, and he played his first game for HERSHEY on Saturday night since October 25th. He was recalled to Denver on Sunday morning after Riku Hahl was injured in Colorado's 5-4 overtime loss at Columbus Saturday night. The flagship station of HERSHEY BEARS hockey changed music as of midnight today. The station formerly known as BIG 92.7 FM becomes Smooth Jazz 92.7. The station's new call letters are WSJW. All regular season and post season games in 2003-04 will air as scheduled. Eric Perrin is HERSHEY'S Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week nominee. Perrin picked up one goal and six assists last week. Perrin also begins the week tied with Cleveland's Miroslav Zalesak for the AHL's scoring lead. Both Perrin and Zalesak have 66 points with six weeks remaining in the regular season.
Colorado Update: The Avalanche fell Saturday night 5-4 in overtime to the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena. Colorado is winless in three games after the overtime defeat against the Jackets, and now has just one victory in seven games. The Avs still hold onto first place in the Northwest Division, but lead Vancouver by just one point. Tony Granato's team will hit the ice tonight at Pepsi Center against HERSHEY'S secondary affiliate, the Tampa Bay Lightning. The game against the Bolts begins a four game homestand. A huge game looms Wednesday as the Vancouver Canucks visit Denver for the final time in the regular season. The Avalanche then host San Jose Friday and Calgary on Sunday to round out the four game week.
Tampa Bay Update: The countdown is on towards Tampa's second straight Southeast Division title. The Lightning have a 19 point lead on second place Florida with 18 games remaining. The Bolts defeated the Washington Capitals Saturday night for the second time in six days 4-2 at the St. Pete Times Forum. Tampa Bay will open the club's March schedule tonight against Colorado, and then travel to Chicago for a game with the Blackhawks at the United Center Wednesday evening. The Lightning will host New Jersey on Friday night before hitting the road again on Saturday in Sunrise, Florida against the Panthers.
