Manchester Monarchs News Release
LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
Vs. Lowell (2/18): Goaltender Milan Hnilicka made 23 saves in his first American Hockey League game in two months and recorded his first shutout of the season as the Monarchs blanked the Lowell Lock Monsters, 3-0, on Wednesday night at the Tsongas Arena. Left wing Noah Clarke had a part in all three goals as he scored two and assisted on another from center Michael Cammalleri.
Vs. Providence (2/20): Goaltender Adam Hauser stopped all 19 shots he faced in relief as the Monarchs skated by the Providence Bruins, 3-1, at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Friday night. Hauser relieved goaltender Milan Hnilicka, who left the game with 1:23 left in the first period after spraining his right knee. Defenseman Troy Milam scored a short-handed goal, his first as a Monarch, midway through the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Center Jerred Smithson and left wing Noah Clarke added power play goals to give the Monarchs the victory. Hnilicka made six saves on seven shots before he left the game.
Vs. Portland (2/21): Left wing Noah Clarke scored his 19th goal of the season with less than two minutes left in the game to tie the Portland Pirates, 1-1, at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Saturday night. Goaltender Adam Hauser made 31 saves in 65 minutes of play and his counterpart, Portland goaltender Maxime Ouellet, made 32 saves. The Monarchs went 0-for-7 on the power play and killed all five of the Pirates power play opportunities.
TEAM NOTEs
Left wing Noah Clarke's three-game goal streak and six-game scoring streak are the longest of his career. The rookie from LaVerne, California, a ninth-round pick (250th overall) of the Los Angeles Kings in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, has four goals in his last three games and eight points (5-3=8) in his last six games.
Clarke's three-game goal streak is the second longest of its kind in the AHL. Albany's Aleksander Suglobov and Hershey's Travis Brigley each own four-game goal streaks. The longest goal streak in the League this season is five games.
Clarke and four other players, including Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's Eric Meloche, Grand Rapids' Jiri Hudler, St. John's Karel Pilar and Suglobov, share the longest current scoring streak in the AHL at six games.
Clarke's two-goal effort against the Lowell Lock Monsters on Wednesday, February 18 marked his third multi-goal game of the season. Clarke also had two goals against the Worcester IceCats on January 31, and three goals against the Springfield Falcons on November 23.
Thanks to his recent hot streak, Clarke is within three points of St. John's Kyle Wellwood for the lead in rookie scoring in the AHL. Through 52 games, Clarke has 38 points (19-19=38). Wellwood has 41 points (13-28=41) in 54 games. Clarke's 19 goals rank third and his 19 assists rank fourth among first year players. His six power play goals rank third among rookies.
Center Jerred Smithson has points in four of his last five games (2-2=4). The 25-year-old native of Calgary, Alberta, enters tonight's action against the Binghamton Senators with a three-game scoring streak (1-2=3). The streak equals his longest of the season. Smithson also scored in three straight games from December 26-28.
With his 23 saves against the Lock Monsters on Wednesday, goaltender Milan Hnilicka helped the Monarchs set a new team record for shutouts in a season. The shutout against the Lock Monsters was the team's eighth of the season. The Monarchs collected seven shutouts during both the 2002-03 and 2001-02 seasons.
Goaltender Mathieu Chouinard, currently on recall with the Kings, has four of the Monarchs' eight shutouts this season. Goaltender Adam Hauser has three shutouts and Hnilicka has one.
Thanks to their 1-1 tie with the Portland Pirates on Saturday, February 21, the Monarchs finished their season-long six-game road trip through New England with a 3-1-2-0 record. The Monarchs outscored their opposition 15-9 in the six games.
The Monarchs are 6-4-3-0 in their last 13 road games after opening the season with just four wins in their first 16 games away from the Verizon Wireless Arena (4-10-1-1).
The Monarchs' three-game road unbeaten streak (2-0-1-0) is their longest of the season. They've outscored the opposition 7-2 in the three contests.
Through eight February games, the Monarchs are 4-2-2-0 with a goals-against-average of 1.75 and a save-percentage of .942. Hauser has appeared in five of the eight games for the Monarchs. In his five appearances, he has a record of 2-1-2, a goals-against-average of 1.87 and a save-percentage of .939.
Hauser's next appearance will be his 30th as a Monarch, tying him with former Monarch Cristobal Huet for second place on the all-time list. Huet appeared in 30 games for the Monarchs last year. The Monarchs' all-time appearance leader for a goaltender is Travis Scott. He appeared in 89 games from 2001-03.
Hauser is on pace to set a new career mark for goals-against-average in a Monarchs uniform. Through 29 games, he has a 2.11 goals-against-average. The Monarchs' career goals-against-average leader is Huet, who gathered a 2.29 goals-against-average in 30 career starts.
The Monarchs have killed 17 straight power plays. The streak dates back to the third period of their game at Providence on February 15.
The Monarchs are 23-3-2-2 when they score three or more goals this season. The last time they lost when they scored at least three goals was on January 31 vs. the Lock Monsters (4-3 at the Verizon Wireless Arena).
The Monarchs are 15-4-0-2 in 21 home games against the Atlantic Division this season. They are 2-3-1-0 in six games on home ice against the rest of the AHL
