February 23, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release

Last Week: The BEARS continued their struggles against the Philadelphia Phantoms by dropping both games of a home and home series on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, B.J. Abel and Mark Murphy scored goals for Philly in the first period, and Neil Little would need no further support in a 3-0 Phantoms victory. Tom Lawson took the loss for HERSHEY, his 10th of the season. On Saturday night, the BEARS hosted the biggest crowd to ever watch a hockey game in central Pennsylvania. HERSHEY established a new single game attendance record by having 10,812 fans pass through the gates, but lost to Philadelphia 4-1. The BEARS held a 1-0 lead into the third period, but allowed four goals in the final stanza to fall for the tenth consecutive time to the Phantoms this season. Pascal Trepanier scored his eighth goal of the season in the first period for the only tally of the night for the home team. HERSHEY'S record entering the week is 26-23-8-4, good for third place in the AHL's East Division.

Notables: The goal for Trepanier in the first period Saturday night ended a long goalless drought for HERSHEY against Philadelphia. Before Trepanier scored at the 17:16 mark of the first period, the BEARS had not scored a goal in 238 minutes, 54 seconds dating back to December 26, 2003 against the Phantoms. Following Saturday's game, defenseman Dean Arsene and forward David Masse were reassigned to Reading (ECHL). The hat trick scored by Philadelphia defenseman Freddy Meyer was the second allowed by HERSHEY this season. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton forward Michel Ouellet also scored three goals against HERSHEY earlier this season on December 10 at Wachovia Arena. With the loss at home Saturday night, the BEARS have now dropped three straight games at GIANT Center for the first time this season. The previous record for a single HERSHEY BEARS game came last season on April 5th when 10,802 watched the BEARS defeat the Philadelphia Phantoms 4-2. The loss Saturday was only the second time this season that HERSHEY lost in regulation when leading after two periods. Friday's game at Rochester will be the only time this season that the BEARS visit their longest active American Hockey League Rival. The BEARS and Americans have played one another every season since the 1956-57 season.

Colorado Update: Mikhail Kuleshov made his NHL debut Friday night in Dallas as the Avalanche lost to the Stars 5-1. Colorado rallied Sunday to win at Minnesota 3-1, snapping a three game losing streak. Brett Clark scored his first goal of the season for the Avalanche Wednesday night in a 5-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers. It was the first goal for Clark in the NHL since the 2000-01 season for the Atlanta Thrashers. He has a goal and an assist in eight games for Colorado this season. The Avs lead Vancouver by five points in the Northwest Division beginning play this week. Colorado will host the Calgary Flames Tuesday night at Pepsi Center, and play at home again Thursday with the St. Louis Blues in town. Tony Granato's team will round out the three game week with a game in Columbus against the Blue Jackets Saturday evening at Nationwide Arena.

Tampa Bay Update: The Lightning continue to march toward a Southeast Division championship despite a 4-3 loss to Buffalo Friday night. Tampa Bay leads second place Florida by 16 points in the Southeast with two games in hand. The Bolts look for a 32nd win of the season tonight when they play at the MCI Center in Washington against the Capitals. A busy week continues for Tampa with the conclusion of the current four game road trip Wednesday night in Atlanta against Bob Hartley's Atlanta Thrashers. Back to back home games await the Lightning this Friday and Saturday when the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Washington Capitals come to call. Toronto will be at the St. Pete Times Forum Friday while the Caps come to visit Saturday evening.

Upcoming promotions: February 29th is Verizon Wireless night at GIANT Center when the BEARS host the Binghamton Senators at 5:00 p.m. The first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a free cardboard replica of a HERSHEY BEARS goalie mask. Frederick Photo Night is Sunday, March 14th at GIANT Center when the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins come to call.
