Manchester Monarchs News Release
LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
Vs. Bridgeport (1/30): The Monarchs took the lead early but couldn't hold on as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers won 5-2 at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Forward Michael Cammalleri and right wing Sam Ftorek scored early for the Monarchs, who built a 2-0 second period lead. But Bridgeport rallied back to tie it up by the end of the period. The third period belonged to the Sound Tigers as they scored three more goals to secure the victory. Monarchs' goaltender Mathieu Chouinard made 20 saves on the night.
Vs. Worcester (1/31): Defenseman Bryan Muir started off the scoring at 3:59 of the second period and left wing Noah Clarke added two more goals for the Monarchs later in the period. But the IceCats dominated the third period and evened things up at 3 apiece with defenseman Trevor Byrne's goal, scored with 14.4 seconds left in regulation play at the Centrum Centre. Monarchs' goaltender Adam Hauser stopped 25 of the 28 shots he faced. Center Steve Kelly had three assists on the night, becoming the first to reach the 100-assist plateau in a Monarchs' uniform.
TEAM NOTES
Center Steve Kelly's third assist against the Worcester IceCats on Saturday, January 31 was his 100th in a Monarchs' uniform. Kelly is the Monarchs all-time assist leader. Second on the list is right wing Pavel Rosa with 68.
Kelly leads the AHL with 35 total assists in 40 games this season. Second on the League list is Rosa with 33.
Kelly has collected three or more points in six games this season. His season high for points in a game is four, set with four assists against the Lowell Lock Monsters on Sunday, January 4.
Kelly has 142 points (42-100=142) in 143 career regular season games with the Monarchs over the last three seasons.
TEAM NOTES (CONTINUED)
Kelly needs only nine assists to equal the Monarchs' record for assists in a season. Kelly established the record with 44 assists in 54 games with the Monarchs last season.
Kelly is three points shy of 250 in his AHL career. He has 247 points (74-173=247) in 278 career AHL games with the Monarchs, the Albany River Rats and the Hamilton Bulldogs.
Kelly is also six games shy of 500 for his professional career. The Vancouver, British Columbia native has 284 points (90-194=284) in 454 career games in the NHL, AHL and IHL. His NHL numbers include 21 points (9-12=21) in 147 career games with the Los Angeles Kings, the New Jersey Devils, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Edmonton Oilers.
Kelly, who ranks fifth in the AHL with 36 minor penalties, reached 750 career penalty minutes with his high sticking minor against the IceCats on Saturday.
Rosa needs only 11 points to match his scoring output from last year, when he finished second on the Monarchs in goals (28), assists (35) and points (63). Through 48 games, Rosa leads the Monarchs with 52 points (19-33=52). Rosa also is within 21 points of tying former Monarchs' left wing Eric Healey for the single season scoring record. Healey established the record with 73 points (42-31=73) last year.
Rookie left wing Noah Clarke collected two of the Monarchs' three goals against the IceCats on Saturday. The game marked his first multi-point effort since totaling three points (1-2=3) against the Lock Monsters on Friday, December 5. Prior to Saturday's game, Clarke last scored multiple goals against the Springfield Falcons (3-0=3) on Sunday, November 23.
The Monarchs have been outscored 6-0 in the third period of their last two games. They allowed three goals to the IceCats on Saturday, and three goals to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday, January 30. Despite the recent slump, the Monarchs are still outscoring the competition 46-36 in the third period this season.
The Monarchs are winless in their last three games (0-2-1-0). Their longest winless streak of the season is four games. The Monarchs went 0-3-1-0 from Saturday, December 6 through Friday, December 19.
Goaltender Mathieu Chouinard's shutout streak ended at 173 minutes and 24 seconds against the Sound Tigers. Forward Ryan Kraft halted the streak with his goal at 3:40 of the second period. The streak included two shutout wins (2-0 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack on Saturday, January 24; 6-0 win over the Portland Pirates on Saturday, January 17) over four games. Prior to Kraft's goal, Chouinard had last allowed a goal to the Lock Monsters in the second period of the Monarchs' 3-1 win on Saturday, January 10.
Chouinard was credited with the loss against the Sound Tigers on Friday. The loss was his first at the Verizon Wireless Arena this season. He entered Friday's action with a 5-0-0 record on home ice.
Left wing Chris Schmidt collected his first minor penalty of the season against the IceCats on Saturday. He had gone without a penalty in his first 22 games this season.
Right wing Sam Ftorek's next point will be his 200th as a professional. The graduate of St. Anselm College has 199 points (98-101=199) in 335 career professional games. Ftorek, who signed a professional tryout agreement with the Monarchs on Saturday, November 29, has five points (1-4=5) in his last six games.
Right wing George Parros' appearance against the IceCats on Saturday marked his 50th AHL game. In 50 games, the rookie from Randolph, New Jersey, has eight points (3-5=8) and 85 penalty minutes.
The IceCats are the only team in the Atlantic Division that hasn't lost on home ice to the Monarchs this season. The Monarchs are 0-1-2-0 in three games at the Centrum Centre this season.
Terry Virtue's second period power play goal snapped a Monarchs' streak of 28 consecutive penalty-kills over seven games. The IceCats finished 1-for-8 on the power play in Saturday's game.
