P-Bruins alumni sweep NHL weekly honors

Former Providence Bruins goaltender Andrew Raycroft and original P-Bruins right wing Glen Murray swept the NHL's weekly honors for the period ending Sunday, February 1, it was announced on Monday. Raycroft was named the NHL's Defensive Player of the Week after posting a 3-0-0 record, 0.66 GAA and .979 save percentage, along with one shutout. Murray was named the NHL's Offensive Player of the Week after scoring seven goals in four games, including three consecutive game-winners.

Raycroft, a 23-year-old native of Belleville, Ontario, is in his first full NHL season with the Boston Bruins. He spent most of his first three professional seasons in Providence, beginning in the 2000-01 season. Raycroft was voted by his teammates as the P-Bruins' Most Valuable Player in 2001-02, after setting franchise single-season records for games played (56), minutes played (3,317), saves (1,546) and shutouts (4). He posted back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2001-02 and 2002-03. Raycroft also ranks second in team history in wins (56) and shutouts (6). He was 56-48-13 with a 2.71 GAA and .911 save percentage in 121 career games with Providence.

Raycroft is 18-12-6 in 37 games this season with Boston, along with a 1.89 GAA (fifth in the NHL) and .932 save percentage (fourth in the NHL). He also has three shutouts. He is 9-2-0 with a 1.27 GAA and .958 save percentage since January 1. His outstanding efforts as a rookie this season have been recognized in his selection to play in the YoungStars Game at the NHL All-Star Weekend. Raycroft was Boston's fourth pick, 135th overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

Murray, a member of the P-Bruins' inaugural team of 1992-93, leads Boston with 21 goals and with 180 shots on goal. The 31-year-old native of Halifax, Nova Scotia recorded a hat trick in the Bruins' 4-1 win over Pittsburgh on Sunday, giving him his fifth career 20-goal season in the NHL. He also scored three of the Bruins' four goals in a home-and-home series with the New York Islanders on January 27 and 29, before scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win at Montreal on Saturday.

Murray was Boston's first pick, 18th overall, in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. He posted 30-26-56 totals in 48 games as a rookie with Providence in 1992-93, and also notched 3-4-7 totals in 27 games that season with Boston. He reached the NHL with Boston full-time in 1993-94, and played two seasons there before being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of a deal for Kevin Stevens and Shawn McEachern on August 2, 1995. He was later traded to the Los Angeles Kings on March 18, 1997, before being reacquired by Boston with former P-Bruin Jozef Stumpel in exchange for Jason Allison and Mikko Eloranta on October 24, 2001. Murray has led the Bruins in goals in each of the last two seasons (41 and 44, respectively), and has 257-247-504 totals in 796 career NHL games.

The Providence Bruins return to action on home ice on Friday, February 6 at 7:05 p.m., when they host the Hartford Wolf Pack. The game will be televised live on COX 3.
