AA Winnipeg Goldeyes

Rough Night in Sioux City

June 12, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Friday night was not Matt Jackson's night.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes lanky right-hander was tagged for seven runs on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings as he and the Goldeyes were beat 10-4 by the Sioux City Explorers.

Of course, it's not like Jackson was the goat. The Goldeyes offense was absent as Winnipeg managed only four runs on six hits and fell to 9-12 on the season.

It didn't help that Sioux City's first run was scored on a rather controversial play. The Explorers had the bases loaded when Noah Perio hit a cue-shot about six feet down the third base line. Catcher Ramon Ortega picked up the squibbler and forced Michael Lang, who was on third and had to head home, to go well outside the base line. In fact, Lang ran almost all the way to the X's on-deck circle. However, home plate umpire Lance Seilhamer ignored the line and called Lang safe. Goldeyes manager Rick Forney was subsequently tossed from the game. He obviously didn't agree with Seilhamer's call.

Regardless, Game 3 -- the rubber-match of this three-game set at Lewis and Clark Park in Sioux City -- will be played on Saturday night. On the upside, the worst the Goldeyes can do is finish 3-3 on this six-game road trip.

"It was kind of ugly out there for a little bit," said Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea. "We were battling and we were pitching the ball fairly well, but we let if get away from us at the end. Matt (Jackson) could very easily have given us zero runs tonight. The ball just found some holes. He wasn't hit that hard. He pitched pretty well, but things just didn't go our way tonight."

Trailing 4-0 in the top of the fourth, Casey Haerther was hit by a pitch and after Nic Jackson flied out to left, Josh Mazzola was safe on a fielder's choice while Haerther moved to second. That's when Jon Weber doubled to drive home both Haerther and Mazzola and the Goldeyes were suddenly back in the game.

But Sioux City added three more in the bottom of the sixth and three more in the eighth and took a 10-2 lead into the ninth.

In the top of the ninth, Luis Alen, Ramon Ortega and Brady Wilson walked and Brad Boyer singled home Alen and Ortega to make it interesting, but the hole was simply too deep.

Ortega and Nick Jackson had two hits each. Weber, with that two-RBI double, and Boyer with his RBI single had the only other hits.

Sioux City starter Patrick Johnson (4-0, 2.40 ERA) picked up the win, while Jackson (2-2, 4.21 ERA) was tagged with the loss.

The Goldeyes and Explorers will play the final game of this three-game series in Sioux City on Saturday night. Lefthander Kyle Anderson (2-1, 3.09 ERA) will get the start for the Goldeyes. The game can be heard live at 7:05 p.m., on The Jewel 100.5 with Steve Schuster at the microphone.

The Goldeyes will return home on Monday, June 15 to play host to the first-place St. Paul Saints. Tickets for that series and all Goldeyes games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
