Saints Answer First Shutout of Season with 6-2 Win, Split Double Header

SIOUX FALLS, SD - If anyone questioned how the St. Paul Saints would answer after being blanked for the first time this season, they didn't have to wonder long. A five run second inning prevented the Saints from losing back-to-back games for the first time this season as they split the double header with the Sioux Falls Canaries with a 6-2 win in game two on Friday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.

The Saints sent nine men to the plate in the second inning and started it with a double from Ian Gac, which extended his hitting streak to 10 games, the longest by a Saints player this season. Mike Kvasnicka dropped a single into right field scoring Gac to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Angelo Songco followed with a single to put runners at first and second. Vinny DiFazio then drilled a hanging breaking ball over the left field wall, his third of the season, to give the Saints a 4-0 lead. Three batters later Alonzo Harris did the same, a solo shot over the left field wall for his second homer of the season, to give the Saints a 5-0 lead. The five run inning matched their highest output in an inning this season.

That was more than enough for Saints starter Kramer Sneed who was solid once again He retired the first nine batters he faced before surrendering a run in the fourth. Vickash Ramjit singled, stole second and scored on a two out single from Richard Stock.

In the fifth Brian Humphries led off against Sneed with a solo homer, his fourth of the season, to pull the Canaries within three at 5-2. That was all Sneed would relinquish going 6.0 innings allowing two runs on five hits while striking out two.

The Saints scored an insurance run in the sixth when Steve Nikorak walked, was sacrificed to second and scored on Alonzo Harris' double. Harris finished the game 2-4 with a double, home run, RBI and a run scored. He went 4-7 in the double header.

The same two teams meet in the third game of the four game series on Saturday evening at 6:05 p.m. at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Saints send RHP Robert Coe (2-0, 1.25) to the mound against Canaries RHP Brett Gerritse (0-4, 5.31). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
