Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
The Gary SouthShore RailCats were finally able to capitalize on given opportunities, breaking through with a game-winning Jon Jones triple in the eighth inning to defeat the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks 4-3 Friday night in front of a season-high 4,012 fans at the U.S. Steel Yard.
The RailCats (12-9) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning after forcing FM starter Brandon Mann to throw 42 pitches in the inning, but the Redhawks (6-15) came back to tie it in the fourth before snagging the lead in the fifth.
The 'Cats had opportunities to tie or take the lead in the fifth, sixth and seventh before doing so in the eighth.
In the sixth, third baseman Roger Bernal was gunned down at the plate as the final out trying to tie the game. Gary had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh, but two fielder's choice groundouts ruined their opportunity.
Finally back-to-back singles led off the eighth before Jones' league-leading fourth triple just missed clearing the left field wall, driving in two runs and giving the 'Cats the lead for good.
Starting pitcher Rene Solis went five innings in his no decision, and the RailCats' bullpen pitched a scoreless final four innings to keep the Redhawks at bay.
Paul Mittura went 2.0 innings, Jessie Snodgrass earned the win in his scoreless eighth and Andy Loomis worked his sixth save in as many opportunities.
