Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates, American Hockey League affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes, announced today that Ron Cain has become the Majority Owner of Portland Pirates, LLC.
Cain is Chairman and CEO of Legacy Holding Co., an industry-leading third-party logistics company based in Portsmouth, NH. Cain has been involved in the sport of hockey as a player, coach, and builder throughout his life. His sons have been active in youth and junior hockey.
As CEO of Legacy Holding Company, Cain is the chairman of Legacy Global Sports, an international sports agency that acts as a player agency, arranges tournaments and sports tours, and handles sports travel. Legacy Global Sports also owns and operates the Selects Sports programs, which has seen 26 first round NHL Entry Level players drafted from Selects Hockey programs as well as a top tier soccer program and a high performance academy at South Kent School in Connecticut. Cain was also instrumental in the creation of the USPHL, a top tier USA Hockey junior league.
Cain is co-owner of the MHG Ice Centre in Saco, Maine, which is home to the Portland Junior Pirates as well as serving as the AHL's Portland Pirates' high performance practice facility, considered one of the finest facilities of its kind in the United States. Cain purchased the facility in 2007 and became an investor in the Portland Pirates in 2010.
Cain was instrumental in the start of the MHG Ice Centre's Learn to Play programs, under the "Little Crackers Program" name, which have been in place since 2008. The program, which is free and open to the public, has been recognized by USA Hockey, with over 1000 local children participating over the past 5 years, free of charge.
In 2012, Cain expanded the Junior Pirates program into the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, which is the current home of the Portland Pirates, partnering with Firland Management, the owners and operators of the Colisee.
"Ron has been a critical part of our ownership group, serving on our Board of Managers with myself and Brian Petrovek, and as Alternate Governor for the Pirates on the AHL Board of Governors since 2010," said Lyman Bullard, Portland Pirates Chairman and Governor. "He is an important part of the hockey and business community in Southern Maine, and we are very pleased that he has agreed to become the Majority Owner of Portland Pirates, LLC."
