Charleston RiverDogs News Release
ROME, Ga.- Dimaster Delgado and Matt Small combined to shutout the Charleston RiverDogs on four base hits, as Rome topped the Charleston RiverDogs 2-0 in South Atlantic League action at State Mutual Stadium Wednesday evening.
With the victory, Rome improves to 24-26 in the second half, while Charleston loses for just the second time in its last eight games to fall to 22-28 this half. The RiverDogs, who were shutout for the first time since Aug. 5 and the seventh time this year, have now dropped eight of their last 10 games away from Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Starter Delgado (4-6) earned the win rendering Charleston scoreless over 6.2 innings of two-hit baseball while walking four and fanning five. Small hurled the final 2.1 innings surrendering two Charleston hits with a walk and three punchouts to notch his fourth save.
Charleston helped Rome's cause by stranding 10 runners on base for the first time since July 26, including the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning.
Rome struck first in the second inning against RiverDogs starter Trent Lare for a 1-0 lead on Matt Kennelly's RBI single to score Calvin Culver, who reached on an error to start the second.
Shortstop Ryan Barba doubled to leadoff the third frame, moved to third on Shayne Moody's sacrifice bunt, and came around to score on Joel Campusano's sacrifice fly as Rome led 2-0.
Lare (2-3) ended up as the hard-luck loser allowing just two runs (one earned) over six innings while not walking a batter for his third consecutive start spanning 19 innings. Starter-turned-reliever Manny Banuelos pitched two perfect frames in the seventh and eighth innings and combined with Lare to retire 17 of the final 18 Rome batters.
No Rome player recorded multiple hits, while Abraham Almonte increased his hitting streak to 11 games, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases. Ray Kruml and Addison Maruszak accounted for the other two Charleston hits.
Game two of this three-game series is slated for Thursday @ 7 p.m. from State Mutual Stadium. Charleston sends right-hander Brett Smith (0-0, 0.82) to the hill, while Rome counters with southpaw Mike Minor (NA), who will be making his first professional start after being drafted in the first round (seventh overall) of the 2009 Draft out of Vanderbilt University.
