Power's Streak Ends

Charleston, WV (August 19, 2009) - Five errors haunted the West Virginia Power at Appalachian Power Park on Wednesday night as West Virginia's ten game winning streak came to an end in a 9-2 loss to the Asheville Tourists.

The Tourists jumped out to an early lead for the second night in a row. Kiel Roling and Jimmy Cesario ripped back-to-back sacrifice fly balls to plate a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Scott Robinson started the top of the third inning with a double and scored on Delta Cleary Jr.'s base hit. Cleary Jr. scored later in the inning on Cesario's triple to give Asheville a 4-0 lead.

The Power had the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the fourth inning when Danny Bomback singled in Kyle Morgan to put the Power on the board. Asheville scored runs in four out of the final five innings. With runners on first and third and one out in the fifth inning, Cesario tried to steal second but was thrown out by Josue Peley, but Jordan Pacheco scored on the throw down to second. Tyler Massey's sacrifice fly plated David Christensen in the sixth inning and Kiel Roling belted a solo homer in the seventh.

Asheville scored two more times in the eighth inning to put the game away. Christensen reached on a one out single and scored on Massey's triple. Massey scored their final run moments later on Carlos Martinez's sacrifice fly. The Power scored the game's final run in the bottom of the eighth. Josue Peley hit a groundball to Martinez, but the Asheville shortstop booted it, allowing Calvin Anderson to score.

Dan Houston (7-8) allowed a run on four hits and fanned six batters in six innings to score the victory. Brett Lorin (0-1) walked six batters and was tagged for five runs on four hits over four and a third while suffering the loss. Only five of the nine runs surrendered by the Power were earned runs.

West Virginia fell to 56-62 overall, and 29-19 in the second half after the loss, while the Tourists improved to 51-62 overall and 31-19 in the second half after the victory. Danny Bomback led the way for West Virginia with a 2-for-3 performance and reached three times. Bomback has six hits over the first three games of the series. Calvin Anderson reached three times in four trips to the plate and extended his hitting streak to four games.

West Virginia will finish the four game series with the Asheville Tourists at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday night. The Power will start right hander Hunter Strickland (3-0, 1.96) and the Tourists will counter with right hander Jonnathan Aristil (2-8, 5.14). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:05 PM.
