Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

LAKEWOOD, NJ - There were five runs scored in the fifth inning, two for the Hagerstown Suns and three for the Lakewood BlueClaws as the teams did not score in any other inning in a 3-2 ballgame on Wednesday night.

The two teams each had big fifth innings, but it was the BlueClaws who out-scored the Suns in the inning where the only runs in the game were scored. In the top half of the inning, the Suns scored two off of BlueClaws starter Jesus Sanchez.

In the bottom half of the inning, the BlueClaws (25-24) strung together five hits and three runs to take a 3-2 lead. In the inning, Harold Garcia singled before an RBI-double by Travis d'Arnaud, an RBI-triple by Jim Murphy and another RBI-double by Jeremy Hamilton.

Sanchez (9-6) picks up the win and is now tied in wins with All-Star break departure Jon Velasquez. He went 5.1 innings and struck out seven while allowing two runs. Sanchez left the game in the sixth with two on and one out as Eryk McConnell came into the game. McConnell struck out the two batters he faced, then worked two more clean innings before Santo Hernandez picked up his second save of the year. The BlueClaws remain perfect in save opportunities since the departure of BJ Rosenberg.

Juan Jamie started and lasted just three innings for the Suns (16-33) as he lacked control but did not allow a run. Patrick Arnold (3-3) then pitched two and picked up the loss, allowing the three-run fifth inning.

The BlueClaws belted out nine hits and d'Arnaud reached all four times he batted with a pair of doubles and two walks. The win puts the BlueClaws above the .500 mark in the second half.

The BlueClaws and the Suns will play game two of their three-game series on Thursday at 7:05 pm. For the BlueClaws Justin De Fratus (5-5), who has had a string of impressive performances, will get his call to the mound and he will be opposed by righty Marcos Frias (7-4).
