Kane County Cougars News Release

Clinton, IA – The Kane County Cougars terminated a five-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Clinton LumberKings Sunday afternoon at Alliant Energy Field. Mike Rogers tossed a season-high 7 1/3 innings, and Ryan Ruiz connected for three hits to lead the offensive attack.

Ruiz got the Cougars rolling in the first against Clinton's starter Michael Schlact when he blasted a one-out solo homer to the opposite way for a 1-0 game. Travis Chapman had a run-scoring groundout in the fourth to plate Kory Wayment for a 2-0 lead. Ruiz led off the fifth with a double and scored on Tommy Everidge's RBI single. The LumberKings got their only tally of the game in the fifth against Rogers, a solo home run by Ian Gac for a 3-1 score that became the final.

Rogers (3-3) allowed just one run on three hits, walked one and fanned four in longest performance of the year. J.R. Pickens relieved the right-hander, got a double play grounder to end the eighth and worked the ninth for his second save. Schlact (5-3) took the loss for Clinton.

After salvaging one in Clinton, the Cougars begin a three-game series in Beloit. Monday night's game is set for 7 CDT. Tony Evans, who joined the Cougars when his contract was purchased by Oakland out of an independent league, makes his Kane County (26-36) debut against right-hander Josh Hill (1-2, 3.89) for the Snappers.
