Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (June 12, 2005) - The Burlington Bees (31-32) scored seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the third inning, but it was a six-run seventh for the Ft. Wayne Wizards (34-28) that made the biggest difference in the Wizards 10-7 win at Community Field this afternoon. The Wizards avoided a sweep of the five-game series and snapped the Bees' longest winning streak of the season at four.
The Wizards got out early against Bees' starter Kyle Crist. Peter Ciofrone doubled and scored on a single by Matt Lauderdale with two outs in the first. Ciofrone singled again in the third and scored along with Tom Vincent on a double by Brett Dowdy to give the Wizards a 3-0 lead.
The Bees broke through against Wizards' starter Mike Ekstrom in the bottom of the third. Kenard Springer started the rally with a single and Jared Ellis walked. After a long flyout by Irving Falu, Geraldo Valentin singled to load the bases. Pete Maestrales, making his Bees debut, lined a single to left to drive in the first run. Mario Lisson singled to center to drive in the second run. Damaso Espino followed with a base hit to center to drive in Valentin with the tying run and then Maestrales came in to score go-ahead run as Yordany Ramirez' throw from the outfield sailed to the backstop for an error. Rusty Brown doubled down the right field line to drive in Lisson and Espino and extend the Bees lead to 6-3. Brown scored on Springer's second single of the inning to cap the rally. Seven runs on seven hits sets a new season-high for runs in an inning and matches the mark for hits.
Crist issued a leadoff walk in the fourth, but retired the next ten batters in a row as he worked into the seventh inning. With one out in the seventh, Chris Kolkhorst doubled. After a lineout by Sean Kazmar, Ciofrone drove in Kolkhorst with his third hit of the game to pull the Wizards to within 7-4. After another base hit by Lauderdale, who had four hits in the game, the Bees brought in Adam Rowe out of the bullpen. Vincent greeted Rowe with an RBI double to cut the lead to two and put the tying runs on base and Dowdy singled to drive them in. Lachlan Dale was next up and he blasted a two-run homer over both walls in left to give the Wizards a 9-7 lead. Rowe (3-3) would finish the game on the mound, allowing one more run in the ninth as Lauderdale doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dowdy who finished with 5 RBI. Rowe was charged with his fourth blown save and his third loss in his last eight appearances.
Jonathan Ellis (1-0) took over for Ekstrom in the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Ricky Steik pitched a scoreless eighth to set up Matt Varner in the ninth. Varner gave up a one-out single to Irving Falu, but struck out two to earn his 19th save in 23 appearances.
The Bees will finish the first half with seven straight road games starting with the first of three in Cedar Rapids tomorrow night. LH Danny Christensen (0-3, 3.99) will start for the Bees. The game starts at 7:00 and will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show staring at 6:40.
