Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The St. Louis Cardinals Sunday announced that they had activated Swing of the Quad Cities pitcher Kyle McClellan from the disabled list. To make room for the righthander, St. Louis released lefthanded reliever Jeff Randazzo from his contract.
McClellan, a 21-year-old righty, had been on the disabled list with shoulder stiffness since May 28. Prior to that, he had gone 0-3 with a 5.18 ERA over 12 appearances, six as a starter and six in relief. McClellan was originally drafted by the Cardinals in the 25th round of the 2002 draft.
McClellan worked four scoreless innings on Sunday afternoon in his return from the disabled list, picking up his first professional save on his 21st birthday.
To make room, the Cardinals released lefthanded reliever Jeff Randazzo from his contract. A Midwest League all-star as a Minnesota Twins prospect in 2001, Randazzo signed with the Cardinals in May after being released by the Twins. In seven outings with the Swing, he struck out 12 while walking eight in 11.2 innings, posting a 6.17 ERA.
The Swing roster currently stands at 25 active players, the maximum allowed by the Midwest League. An updated roster follows this release.
UP NEXT: After an off day on Monday, the Swing and Peoria Chiefs play the first of six straight games to close out the first half on Tuesday night, when Quad Cities sends Donnie Smith (0-1, 6.08) to the mound against lefty Chris Shaver (2-5, 3.90) in a rematch of the Swing's win last Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00, and pregame coverage on WKBF AM-1270 will begin at 1:45.
PROMOTION: Tuesday will be the second of 15 Cubs-Cardinals rivalry games scheduled for John O'Donnell Stadium this season. The Swing will close out the homestand against Peoria on Wednesday, with a 97 Rock/Hooters Beverage night at the ballpark, featuring the live music of Jim the Mule beginning when the gates open at 6:00 p.m.
