West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
BATTLE CREEK - There is no guarantee that the Whitecaps would have come up with the third out in the ninth to force extra innings. However, that possibility was erased on a wild throw to the plate by Brooks Colvin, which allowed pinch runner Shaun Cumberland to score and gave Southwest Michigan a 4-3 victory over West Michigan.
Cumberland took the place of Craig Markel, who doubled to lead off the ninth.
With the infield drawn in, Colvin dove for the ball, but Cumberland was holding at third base. Colvin threw to home, rather than to pitcher Dan Konecny, who was sprinting to cover first ahead of batter Patrick Breen. The throw got past catcher Dusty Ryan, who could not recover in time to nab Cumberland.
In the top o the ninth, Colvin lined a game-tying RBI single to first off the tip of Tommy Nichols' glove. The hit came with two out and kept the game alive.
West Michigan held a 2-0 lead through six innings, but starter Dallas Trahern surrendered a lead-off in the park home run to Patrick Cottrell, which cut the lead in half at 2-1.
In the eighth, Konecny allowed a pair of runs on three hits, including a game-tying double by John Jaso and a go-ahead single from Cottrell.
In the fourth the Whitecaps jumped in front 1-0 on a single from Brent Dlugach. Justin Justice singled home the second West Michigan run in the fifth.
Devil Rays starter James Houser left the game in the sixth inning after he was hit on his pitching forearm by a come-backer off the bat of Luis Sabino. Houser went 5.2 innings, allowed seven hits, two runs and a walk, but struck out eight.
Calvin Carpenter finished the game for the Devil rays and earned the victory.
Southwest Michigan won three of the four games in the series and leads the season series, 7-5.
Lots of Lugnuts: The next seven Whitecaps home games will be against Lansing. Those games will constitute the only appearances of the season at Fifth Third Ballpark for the Blue Jays affiliate.
The First and the Last: West Michigan will play a three game series at home for the first time this season beginning Monday against Lansing. It will also be the last home series of the first half, which concludes for the Whitecaps with a four game set in South Bend next weekend.
