
Devil Rays top West Michigan in series finale 4-3

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays won their first series since May 21 with a 4-3 win in the bottom of the ninth inning against the West Michigan Whitecaps at C.O. Brown Stadium Sunday afternoon.
With a runner on third, one out and the infield in , Patrick Breen hit a grounder to second base but with no one covering first base, he reached on a hit. Whitecaps second baseman Brooks Colvin then fired to home plate though pinch-runner Shaun Cumberland had not broken for the plate. The throw sailed wide of the catcher and Cumberland's sprint home beat the pitcher and the ball to with the winning run.
The Rays fell behind 2-0 by the sixth inning before James Houser left the game after a line drive struck him on his pitching wrist. He had struck out eight and allowed only seven hits and one walk in 5 2/3 innings. Calvin Carpenter spelled relief and eventually picked up the win as the Rays broke a 3-3 tie in the last of the ninth.
Patrick Cottrell hit an inside-the-park home run in the seventh inning to make it a 2-1 game. The Rays scored two more in the eighth for a 3-2 lead as Jaso hit an RBI double and Cottrell added an RBI single.
Southwest Michigan took three of four games from the Whitecaps to bring their own record to 29-31. The team has nine games in Fort Wayne and Dayton before the All-Star break June 20-22 in Peoria, Ill. The team's last series win was at home on May 20-21 when the Rays took two of three from the Lansing Lugnuts.
The Devil Rays will send LHP Jino Gonzalez (1-3, 5.68) to the mound on Monday in Fort Wayne. The Wizards will start RHP Clayton Hamilton (8-3, 3.03). The Rays next home game is on Thirsty Thursday, June 23, against the South Bend Silver Hawks. Select pop and beer will be $1 until the end of the seventh inning.
