Cougars Drop Both Sides of Doubleheader

Clinton, IA – The Kane County Cougars managed only four hits Saturday in the seven-inning second game of a doubleheader, falling 3-0 to the Clinton LumberKings at Alliant Energy Field.

Clinton got all three of its runs against Cougars starter Steve Sharpe, scoring in the first, third and fourth. Jose Pineda had two hits for Kane County, which got shut out for the seventh time this season and the fifth time on the road. Sharpe (3-4) took the loss, Eric Hurley (6-2) recorded the victory and Mike Padgett recorded his third save. Rob Semerano and Marcus McBeth each worked a scoreless relief inning for the Cougars.

Game one resumed from Friday night with Tomas Cabaniel on the mound for the Cougars and Kevin Altman for Clinton. Kane County cut the deficit to four in the fifth after Javier Herrera's two-single scored Nick Blasi. The score remained 6-2 until the Cougars tried to rally in the ninth against John Lujan. Eddie Kim doubled, Chalon Tietje reached on an error and Melillo roped an RBI double for a 6-3 game. Ryan Ruiz singled, but Kane County left the bases loaded when the threat and game ended.

Before Friday's long, overnight delay, Cougars starter Ryan Webb allowed a first-inning double and then had two wild pitches for the game's first run. The LumberKings added to it with three runs in the second and two in the third for a 6-0 score. Kane County's only tally came in the top of the fourth. Raul Padron singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Jose Pineda singled, Nick Blasi drove in Padron to cut it to 6-1.

Webb (3-6) got the defeat and Kevin Altman (5-2) was the winner for Clinton. The two squads conclude the four-game series Sunday afternoon at 2 CDT. Mike Rogers (2-3, 4.79) goes to the mound for Kane County (25-36) against right-hander Michael Schlact (5-2, 4.89) for Clinton (35-27).
