Dayton Dragons News Release
Lansing, MIâ The Dayton Dragons (27-35) had a second chance to take three of four games in a series against the Lansing Lugnuts (33-29). On May 1st, the Dragons looked for three of four over Lansing at Fifth Third Field in Dayton, only to lose 11-4. The Dragons had another chance on Sunday, this time at Oldsmobile Park. The venue was different but the result was the same as Lansing dropped the Dragons and gained a split of the four game and first half series with a 7-2 win on Sunday afternoon.
The Dragons wasted little time getting on the board in the top half of the first inning. Drew Anderson led off the game for the Dragons with a single to left field off Lansing starter A.J. Wideman (ND). On a two strike pitch to Cody Strait, Anderson stole second base as Strait missed on the Wideman curve ball for the first out of the inning. B.J. Szymanski picked up his first of two runs batted in on the afternoon with a double to left that scored Anderson for a 1-0 lead.
The Lugnuts evened the score in the bottom of the second after loading the bases with one down off of Dayton starter Camilo Vazquez (ND). Yuber Rodriguez picked up an infield single on a grounder redirected by the pitcher and the game was tied at 1-1.
Szymanski put Dayton back on top 2-1 in the third. The center fielder came up with the bases loaded and his big bouncer to shortstop scored Chad Ziemendorf, who was hit by a Wideman pitch to lead off the inning, from third to reclaim the lead.
Both starters were gone by the end of the fourth inning. Wideman left with none out in the fourth after getting struck on the ankle with a line drive single off the bat of Bradley Key. Vazquez ran into his pitch count and lasted 4.0 innings scattering four hits with four strikeouts and two walks in getting a no decision.
Lansing took the lead in the bottom half of the fifth inning off Dragons reliever Alexander Farfan (LP, 1-4). Farfan allowed an infield single to Jason Armstrong to lead off the inning. Curtis Thigpen followed with a mammoth two run homer on a 3-2 pitch to give Lansing its first lead of the day at 3-2. For Thigpen the blast was his fifth of the season and second of the series.
The Lugnuts continued the barrage in the sixth, picking up four more runs. Three of the four were charged to Farfan, who loaded the bases on two walks and an infield single. Brad Morenko (ND) came in out of the bullpen and allowed a two RBI double to Jason Armstrong and a two RBI single to Curtis Thigpen. The only run charged to Morenko was the one scored by Armstrong, the first batter he faced.
Farfan allowed five runs, all earned, in just 1.1 innings. He allowed three hits and walked two, with one wild pitch. Jordy Templet (WP, 3-2) was the opposite of Farfan in his 3.0 innings of work. The right hander walked the first man he faced in the fourth and then set down nine in a row before leaving the game following the sixth inning.
The Dragons open a three game series in South Bend, Indiana against the Silver Hawks beginning on Monday night. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries the first game of the three game set between Dayton and South Bend, beginning with the pre game show at 7:30 PM. Monday's first pitch is 8:00 PM, with LHP Philippe Valiquette getting the start for the Dragons. The Silver Hawks have not announced a starting pitcher.
